Elegant boutique hotel with excellent service
Located in the hills overlooking the port, Casa Higueras is my go-to hotel in Valparaiso. While it’s not really centrally located (it’s a fair walk or taxi to most restaurants), it’s in a quiet area of the city and the views are awesome. Personally I find being up in the hills ideal, as Valpo is a port city so being down by the water isn’t a highlight of a stay in the city. There’s a nice on-site restaurant (upscale, seafood-focused) as well that is perfect for a romantic dinner on the patio, or where you can just enjoy the view while having breakfast. As a former mansion that was remodeled into a hotel, there are a number of room categories but no two rooms are the same. If you can swing it, I’d go with a Premium Superior room or higher as they have views of the city (many also have balconies) and are quieter than front-facing rooms. The decor is upscale but comfortable, with dark woods and neutral tones. The hotel is elegant and well-kept, with plenty of space around the hotel to sit and relax. There’s also a nice (though small) outdoor pool and spa area. I wouldn't consider it a true 5-star hotel due to the size and lack of some services, but Valparaiso doesn't really have a true 5-star so Casa Higueras is right there at the top for the city. The real highlight of Casa Higueras though is the service - from arrival until the end of the stay, they always did their best to help in any way possible. The entire staff went above and beyond to make sure guests had a nice time at the hotel and in Valparaiso. This service is really what puts Casa Higueras over the top and makes it a favorite for a comfortable stay in Valpo.
Hotel was comfortable and clean, but location was far from the shore
This hotel was well appointed and comfortable. However, we were there only on a Sunday evening, and there were no other restaurants open. We ate at the hotel, and it was good but a bit pricey. Because we got there late in the day and no one was in the streets at all, we did not feel comfortable walking around. Plus it was very hilly. Our room looked out toward a very shabby area, with houses falling apart, There were better buildings around this area, but it did not encourage us to wander. Looking toward the ocean was the port, so it was filled with equipment and ships. Breakfast the next morning was very nice. If I go back to Valparaiso, I would look for something down nearer to the water, not up on the hill.
Colonial charm in a colourful city
So this is probably the best hotel option in the city as far as I am aware but I feel that a little bit more investment could go a long way to improve the facilities. Its a great location in the part of the city that is famous for its street art and so walking around is easy to do although it is very much up and down hill :-) The hotel is a conversion of an old mansion so its a bit quirky with lifts and stairs to get around. Various room sizes available and we went for the one above the basic room which was small but did have a small balcony but it was still quite cold to sit out on said balcony and tbh it could have done with a good jet wash to clean it along with washing the covers on the chairs so you could sit down on clean seats. We did get moved to a larger room when we told out agent that across the road from the hotel 2 buildings were being refurbished so there was a bit of noise when in an open space. The hotel has a nice pool area although the Pacific breeze did make the pool a bit chilly for my liking, however the most disapointing thing is the view as you are looking directly at a very busy working port with lots of cranes and container ships docking 24/7. Its a real shame but there is nothing that you can do about it so be aware. Also be aware that the restaurant is not actually part of the hotel as its a separate company and we had a meal the first night but werent impressed and there are better options outside the hotel. But the highlight of this hotel was the staff who were so friendly and helpful and really made the stay more enjoyable and as we were stopping for 4 nights (which in hindsight was unusual) they did make a fuss of us. We just feel that it just needs those finishing touches and it would be a 5 star rating.
Great Spot to start our Valparaíso visit
Casa Higueras was our first stop in Chile. We were greeted by a warm and friendly staff member who made sure our room #3 was to our liking and that we knew how everything worked. Our room was spacious and had a beautiful corner terrace overlooking the port in the distance. The front desk manager was super helpful with restaurant recommendations. The morning breakfast buffet was perfect. Perfect location to explore the neighborhoods.
Lovely boutique hotel
This is a very well located hotel at the end of a residential style street. Excellent views from rooms, common areas, restaurant and pool. Helpful staff. Accommodation is spacious, quiet, clean and well equipped. Restaurant provides excellent meals and service. A most comfortable and enjoyable 3 night stay.
