Lovely Boutique Hotel in Wine Country
Leeu House is a charming, well maintained property right in Franschhoek. Comfortable, well appointed rooms. Excellent helpful staff. Comfortable and inviting lounge where you can gather for cocktails.
Little Jewel in the Heart of Franschhoek
I would highly recommend Leeu House. Excellent value for money. The staff is friendly and very helpful, especially to a first time visitor. The town and surroundings are breathtaking. Try the house red wine. Very tasty.
Great location, gardens and views, but a bland, rude- ementary experience !!!
Having driven past the magnificent Cape Dutch Leeu House many times on visits to the Franschhoek valley, it has been on our wish list to experience the dream that the Leeu Collection sells and promises- including owner Mr Singh’s interesting back story. Having had shocking service on a family lunch at Leeu Estate a year ago, we looked forward to a different experience at Leeu House. On arrival the location, historic building and gardens are beautiful and did not disappoint ! Decor however is very bland and set the tone for the levels of service and rest of our stay. In an empty hotel, we saw only one other Dutch couple but many disinterested staff. On check in the first thing we were asked for was more money, as on booking the hotel had incorrectly charged my travel agent ? Hard to describe how condescendingly this was done ? We stay in fantastic hotels around the world, most recently Claridges in London and the Six Senses in the Douro Valley, plus many in the Franschhoek Village, and have seldom experienced this kind of attitude anywhere ? On being taken to my first room, I was lectured on what I could eat and drink at no charge and what I could eat and drink in the room that would be charged for ? I honestly felt like I was checking into a cheap motel ... the items that were being pointed out to me were of a standard that I could not believe ... cheap and nasty ! My fruit basket consisted of three apples ... bearing in mind we are in grape country ! The bathless, bathroom was pointed out to me, it had no towels and so I requested to be moved in the empty hotel to a room with a bath and towels. This was done grudgingly and I was shown to a room facing the staff quarters and back of house service area ! Wanting to escape the unfriendly atmosphere, we went out for dinner that night and had an exceptional meal and experience in the Foliage Restaurant in the high street ( highly recommend this stunning and very memorable restaurant !!!). We decided to have our after dinner coffee back at Leeu House around the winter the fire, but no sooner had we sat down than the small lounge area was being packed away, including the candle on our table, it was only 9.45 - so bad ???!!! Our background music was the entire staff’s loud knocking off conversations, very one star !!! We simply left our coffee and went to our rooms as the unsubtle ushering out was pretty obvious. On retiring to our rooms, I switched on my TV to catch up with Brexit news, only find a screen with more snow than a winter gale in Iceland ? This was accompanied by the glorious sound of bottles and garbage being tipped into dustbins nearby. Not to wax on, but as the only guests, the breakfast was very average, staff were miserable, all made bearable by the glorious views on a perfect Cape winters day. After a long day out we ate in the hotel and whilst nothing excited us on the menu, our waitress was at least obliging. On returning to my room, the tea station had not been replenished as specifically requested ? Spoilt with another beautiful day, we had a decent full English breakfast and went to check out. On presentation of our bill, three items ( a small packet of nuts, a small packet of jelly beans and a small packet of nougat) was charged to the bill from my friends room, none of which she’d eaten. In order not to cause a scene at the unfriendly reception, my friend who doesn’t eat sweets or candy, simply pulled her wallet out and paid cash for the items she’d never eaten ? Sadly, the weird service doesn’t end here. Since I don’t drink pod coffee or long life milk , I always bring my own coffee and pop out and buy fresh milk where the hotel doesn’t supply it, most decent hotels do. I also had an iced tea for the trip back to Cape Town. While sitting at the front reception area checking out, in the presence of two men checking in, my jar of bought coffee, my bottled of iced tea and an item of my underwear was handed to me unceremoniously, in full view of everyone ? Bearing in mind that my room was five steps away from reception and if the management had an iota of professionalism, they would simply have said, ‘you’ve left a few private things in your room, would you like come with me and fetch them ?’ Strike two for the Leeu Collection, although Mr.Singh has beautifully located properties and his gardens are sculpted and adorned with amazing South African Art, his staff are shocking and disinterested and on both visits to his properties there is absolutely no sense of experience or being made to feel special, on the contrary ... Leeu offers Beer service at Champagne prices - what a wasted opportunity ! We love Franschhoek, it’s restaurants, vineyards and quirky stores and will definitely be back, but there are so many better hotels to stay in in Franschhoek, that we won’t ever waste an experience on a Leeu establishment again.
Quaint hotel in Franschhoek
Very convenience location in the center of Franschhoek. Staffs are very friendly and very helpful. The hotel surroundings are very pleasant; very relaxing. The room is very comfortable with all the amenities we need for our stay.
Elegant and refined
We recently stayed at Leeu House as part of our honeymoon and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. You get the best of both worlds staying at Leeu House; the rooms, service and dining are all truly 5* standard, but you’re also in walking distance to the main village of Franschoek, with all its restaurants, markets and coffee shops. You can then hop on the complementary shuttle and use all the amazing facilities at the Leeu Estate. We enjoyed a full day there, including wine tasting, lunch and use of the spa. The staff are very welcoming and incredibly attentive.
