Before we came to South Africa, we did hours, upon hours of research to find the perfect places to stay along the way. When debating the Franschhoek area, we were faced with some pretty amazing looking places. Websites do a great job of showing off a property in the best light imaginable, so we were confused. So, after speaking to our local friend, reading a million reviews, mapping properties and discussing it at length, we booked at La Residence. I was worried that it was too opulent, gaudy or over the top for my tastes, but I also thought the size of the property was ideal being so small and the location was fantastic for exploring the area. Upon driving up, the property looks lovely, but not over the top, but when you step inside the lobby, you are blown away by the beauty and character of the place. However, as you look across the lawn to the pool, you see their mountain backdrop and ask if it is real. The view was something worth taking in for a few minutes to imprint the beauty in your mind. Once they took us to our suite, we were again blown away by the space. This is luxury at it’s finest. They have thought of everything, and the unique styling of the room with the little special touches just make you giggle. Then, they open the balcony doors and you are again faced with the view of the mountains that just can’t be real. We ate dinner here twice, and the food was fantastic and the service even better. One night it was a bit chilly and windy, so they had a fire going and we sat right in front of it. I felt like I was dining in the set of Beauty and the Beast, locked in a beautiful castle!! (Okay, and the coronavirus drama was really picking up back home so we kept joking about getting stuck here, so that added to the drama and excitement) Make sure you make time for lounging at the pool. This was a great part of our trip. Also, have a massage...or two. Make sure you are there for sunset with a drink. Enjoy the gorgeous breakfast spread each morning. Take a bath....or three........ Basically, don’t overbook your time in the area that you don’t have a good amount of time to appreciate the property and environs you paid a good amount of money to enjoy. Just being at this property is a joy, so be there.
Had the delight of a two night stay in a Superior Suite. The room was huge with a spectacular and comfortable bed and very large bathroom, Light and airy room with windows on 3 sides and a private garden. The views from the property are astonishingly beautiful with sundowners on the terrace a real highlight. The staff, from the general manager to the gardeners are all extremely friendly and welcoming and paid attention to individual needs and preference with great discretion. Breakfast is very good indeed and lunch and dinner of good quality. The local town has a great selection of restaurants and they hotel operates a free shuttle into town.Overall, it was more like staying with friend than staying in a hotel...which is probably the best compliment I could make - we will return!
La Residence was our last stop of our South Africa trip. The perfect finish! We arrived quite early and didn’t expect our room to be ready - but as soon as we stepped into this beautiful decorated building we were welcomed by Abre and the Hotel Manager Edward who made us immediately feel welcome. After a short tour of the hotel, we were able to go to our room. A beautiful 2 Bedroom Vineyard Suite (No 2). The mountain view from our private garden was incredibly beautiful and invited for a relaxing break. The room itself was huge, very clean and classy decorated. We spend the afternoon in different vineyards and worked ourselves through some wine tastings, when we realized the time and that we had missed the last run of the wine tram. The La Residence team did not hesitate a second to pick us up from the Glenwood winery. Once back to the hotel, we enjoyed a beautiful sunset while having dinner. The little details and care made our stay extremely special - such as writing our names in front of the dinner menu or to be greeted by name from everyone. All team members were extremely polite and accommodating, especially Taylor was extremely flexible and helpful and made our evening just perfect. I work in a 5* Hotel in London myself and was extremely impressed by how natural their hospitality felt - really nothing seemed to be too much. We unfortunately had only 1 night at this beautiful place, but without doubt we could have spend a week or longer here as they do offer many different activities (private wine tours, horseback riding, fishing, golfing and even chocolate tasting) I will be more than happy to recommend this place to my colleagues, friends and family and who knows.. if my Travels ever bring me back to Franschoeck I will definitely come back too!
This was the first stop on our trip to South Africa, and it made us with we could have spent all of our time here. The warmest of welcomes from the team as we arrived, and we were blown away by the gorgeous interior as you step into the reception hall. The atmosphere is calm and laid back, with every detail thought of, and the rooms were spectacular - we stayed in room 5, with a bathroom that could have been bigger than the bedroom, and a terrace with loungers and a table running the full length. The food, drinks, service and everything was outstanding. We can’t wait to come back and would recommend to anyone looking for a indulgent trip. Thank you
The height of luxury
I came here en route to Cape Town to stay at the sister hotel in the Royal Portfolio Group, the Silo. I’d seen the BBC film about this location and was curious. I was greeted by Werner, who showed me the facilities and introduced me to the lovely flower arranger who featured in the film, who was a delight to talk to. I got to see the spectacular views and was even shown one of the guest bedrooms, before relaxing with a complimentary cup of coffee. I was made to feel like the most important of VIPs even though I was only a brief visitor, so I can only imagine how wonderful it must be to actually stay here. All the staff I met were so friendly, nothing was too much trouble and the service they provided was exquisite. Particular thanks to Werner for his time and his obvious enthusiasm for the hotel and for the Group of which it forms part. I learnt about the community work done by the staff and the projects supported by the Royal Portfolio Foundation. Fantastic hospitality.
