Can’t fault this magnificent gem in the bush
With Covid lockdowns in place, we couldn’t have chosen a better place to see 2021 in. This private lodge nestled in the middle of the Kruger National Park is what dreams are made of. The attentiveness of the staff, the delicious meals and luxury of the rooms surpasses anything we have experienced. Our amazing butler David, quickly learnt our preferences and there was nothing too small or too big that he couldn’t and didn’t deliver. The same can be said for our skilled guide and tracker who were intent on delivering a fantastic bush experience with incredible sightings.
Great sightings, wonderful honeymoon
We had the pleasure of staying at Narina Lodge for our honeymoon. The staff we’re incredible and made the stay a memorable one. Ryno and Collence gave us an amazing wildlife experience with no less than 3 leopard sightings in 3 days, including a night sighting which is very rare. They both went above and beyond to make the stay very special. We really enjoyed the sunset drinks in the park. The food was excellent and the days were very relaxing. I’m looking forward to my next visit !!
A TRUE 5 STAR EXPERIENCE IN EVERY WAY!!
We have just returned from 2 nights at Narina and I simple cannot recommend this place enough! Everything from the staff, the room, the food, the game drives and the setting is simply unforgettable. I have stayed in many 5 star resorts and it is up there with the top. I was bit concerned after reading the review below this regarding the food but I'm not sure he has the correct place - we were offered everything from beef fillet, dorado, seabass, blesbok, duck, ostrich and yes, chicken too. They were all cooked exceptionally with great flavours! The rooms are beautifully decorated with gorgeous views of the river (we had hippos wallowing right in front of us as well as buffalo, hyena and water buck). Our cleaning lady (Nelly) also leaves a personal note everyday which is a lovely touch. Our game ranger and tracker (Mandla and Reckson) were faultless. Incredibly knowledgeable and went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience. We were saw 25 animals (including the big five) and too many birds to mention! Lodrey, the manager, is very attentive. I left my jacket on the plane and mentioned it to her and within 24 hours she had somehow managed to contact the airline, go to the airport to fetch it and when i returned back from the game drive it was handed to me in my room! That is PHENOMENAL service! Cannot wait to return!!
Hopefully some constructive criticism
My family recently were very fortunate to visit 2 of the Lion Sands lodges for a few nights. Nerina and Tinga. This review applies to both. Needless to say, as a RSA citizen, we cannot afford the usual R18 000-00 pp per night rate . Post lockdown , South Africans where rewarded with a huge discount and we paid R6500-00 per person per night. These comments are really aimed at the Moore family who own these lodges. Firstly, let me congratulate you on your beautiful lodges and friendly staff. The game drives where better than expected, especially since we really are not game lodge fanatics. Overall we really had a relaxing and pleasant getaway. Now for some hopefully useful criticism : If you are going to discount by 75%, please have the courtesy to tell your guests that the catering is also discounted by 75%. I cannot imagine that this is what you serve for R18 000-00 per person per night. Truthfully, I have had better catering at a 3 star Road Lodge. If we arrive for dinner, it would have been nice to be met and shown to a table. If you have a lapa with a fire pit maybe get someone to light the fire ( I was given matches when I asked ). For R6500-00 per night, if you are going to have a braai...please include a steak....boerewors and chicken is not acceptable. A top ribeye from Woolies costs R130. I would have brought my own if I had known. The lunch menu equates practical to less than R50 for the miserable offering. Afternoon tea by most definitions is NOT a few miserable dry muffins and the odd sandwich. What a disgrace. Secondly, I don't believe that I am superior to anyone...however, when ALL the staff, including the waiter and cleaners call my wife and myself by our first names from the outset I find this a bit inappropriate for a 5 star lodge. Thirdly.....many of your guests are there for private intimate dinners. Please have the courtesy to ASK if we want the guide to join us for dinner. I can think of better thing to discuss at dinner than the guides home circumstances etc. Fourthly....at R6500-00 per night maybe try and replace the few biscuits and mango pieces in the room on a daily basis.Fifthly...if you are going to be so mean about the snacks during a game drive...rather don't serve anything. And lastly........the recommended ( but unavoidable ) greatly reduced South African gratuity rate, which amounts to about R1000 PER PERSON PER DAY is simply criminal. A family of 4 for 4 nights will be advised to pay R16 000-00 in gratuities ( which I did pay rather than embarrassing everyone )...really !!!!!! While we certainly believe that your staff deserve to be tipped...I fail to see why we have to pay their salaries. So in conclusion Mr Moore. Not all South Africans are stupid. I suggest you maybe visit your lodges and up your game before you lose the only guests you have at the present time.
Now I know what 5 stars means
You get a lot of places claiming to be five stars and the meaning is lost. The experience at Lion Sands Narina Lodge was above and beyond any place I’ve stayed before. Of course that is reflected in the price but it’s worth it. The rooms are amazing extremely private and overlook the Sabie River with animals walking by below you. The staff is very personal and you can learn a lot about their lives by talking with them and learn a little bit more about South Africa. You won’t ever go hungry they are constantly feeding you even on the game drives. We were extremely fortunate to have our guides track and call a pack of 30 or so wild dogs with whom we spent an hours time. The pups were playing and rolling around in the mud and watching the dogs interact and not seeming to care at all that we were there was amazing. They could up their game on the food inventiveness a bit, but overall it was quite excellent. They were offering Covid specials which made the cost a bit more affordable. Highly recommended for a splurge!
