The only private reserve to feature lodges both in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and Kruger National Park, Lion Sands Game Reserve is one of South Africa’s most exclusive safari experiences. There are no fences between the two, which means the wildlife viewing opportunities here are sensational – the area has one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in any national parks and includes the mighty Big Five.
You’ll go on twice-daily game drives in open 4x4s, where there are a maximum of six guests per vehicle and everyone is guaranteed a ‘window’ seat close to the action. There are four lodges; Narina Lodge and Tinga Lodge are both intimate with just nine suites each and are found on the Kruger side, while River Lodge and Ivory Lodge have 20 suites on the Sabi Sand side. The Sabie River flows in-between two sides, creating a sweet spot for wildlife in search of water – you’re likely to spot wildlife wandering past your suite! All of the lodges are gorgeously put together with a clear emphasis on comfort and style. While they differ in size and location, it’s impossible to make the wrong choice at Lion Sands – each suite is designed for complete seclusion and the lodges are regularly featured Condé Nast’s Readers’ Choice Awards.
Lion Sands also has three incredible treehouses that you can choose to stay in overnight – Chalkley, Kingston and Tinyeleti. They are all placed in a remote location that offers its guests for the night panoramic views of the bushveld and a luxurious night of eating, drinking and sleeping in complete privacy – unless you count the sounds of the wildlife around you. It’s the most sensational way to celebrate a special occasion and after a gourmet picnic, you can tuck yourself into a four-poster bed under a canopy of stars.
