2 night stay at Kapama Buffalo Camp
We enjoyed a 2 night stay at Buffalo Camp @Kapama. A wonderful experience, with wonderful game drives. The food was excellent. The staff was professional and extremely helpful. I enjoyed the small camp atmosphere, and the attention to detail of the camp.
Authenticity, ambiance, value for money
Special place, with authentic moments, great people, fantastic drive. Great value for money. Their lodge cater for every need, from high end down to relaxed and just enjoying the real African ambiance which a lot of lodges miss. Attention to detail from the manager all the way down to the staff.
Buffalo camp, Kapama
It was a absolute privilege to stay at Kapama, Buffalo camp! Lodge accommodate max 20 quest, The staff was amazing, always friendly and very helpful. Food and accommodation was exceptional. But the best by far was our game drives, Foster our tracker and Rassie our ranger knoledge was unbelievable. Being South African we know most of the animals or so we thought. We learned so many new interesting facts. We will love to go back!
What a wonderful stay. Luxurious tents, superb food, top notch game drives with great sightings, game ranger was very knowledgeable. Hands-on manager. Professional, friendly personnel. Beautiful bush!
Seven star service - escape lockdown depression in the bush
I am an adult who just returned today from Kapama Southern Camp and Buffalo camp. My experience was beyond phenomenal. I have traveled extensively including to 5 star resorts in the maldives/ zanzibar but service at kapama far exceeds this. This is a lengthy review but summarises in full extent the kapama experience. I wanted a break for my leave from Johannesburg. Was considering pilanesberg as a close commute but ended opting for Kruger and kapama after much research. I emailed madri terreblache with over 40 emails from quotation to departure. I had countless queries and ammendments and called reservations a few times. She always responded timeously and very politely with no ambiguity in what was included. She offered me a phenomenal rate and free upgrade. If you self driving to kapma the road from Johannesburg is pretty good except for a few sections with some potholes. The drive is surprisingly scenic, passing orchards and the beautiful abel erasmus pass. A lot of backdrop of the drakensberg I chose to break my stay into 2 nights Southern camp pool villa, and 2 nights buffalo camp because couldn't decide which lodge would be better. Southern camp and buffalo camp Check in were seamless with minor paperwork. Excellent introductions explaining set up of resort. At buffalo camp was done by a smiling eyed Langu. Southern camp was super luxurious. Service and food were excellent. Room was enormous and could see nyalas/ impala sipping on private pool water. Amazing outdoor showers. Like the height of luxury. All common areas and dining room were beautifully appointed. The service was excellent. We were served by shela. And our guide and trekker - viljoen and sifiso were brilliant. Viljoenhad a wealth of interesting facts. I thought things couldn't get better till I went to buffalo camp. This is a small 10 room tented lodge. The tents are very luxurious with amazing views. You can hear lions roaring at night. This had all the luxuries of a 5 star lodge but felt like visiting an aunt's house/ family's guest house. Melani and, claire, Langu were all so friendly. Even shakes at the bar. They chatted to my mum for half an hour plus and found small town connections. They were approachable and always asking how they could help. They were always available. After being starved of social contact from covid lockdowns this warmth and friendliness even felt better. Dont worry all interactions were done in a safe social distanced/ masked fashion. The common lounge area at kapama buffalo is homely and warm not as luxurious as southern camp but has an amazing warm ambience. Its thatched and has the true african feel without losing it to excessive decadence and modernity. I loved chilling here responding to emails etc. The food was excellent. We are strictly halaal and opted to bring our own meat because we weren't sure if the meat was strictly halaal. Chefs prepared and adapted menus to suit our palates. And this was gourmet food at it's best. For other muslim guests they would be happy to know that beef is from sparta butchery which is SANHA halaal approved (south Africa's most orthodox halaal certifier). Claire even brought out the raw meat in packaging for me to confirm halaal certification. Then the absolute highlight was the game drives and bush walks. We have done many game drives before but these were phenomenal. My parents have been to game parks in Tanzania but this was even better. We saw everything from loads of lions, leopards multiple times, rhinos,.buffalo, giraffe, zebra all bucks and an amazing pangolin sighting. Our guide at buffalo camp was Chris and trekker was safary. Safary has an amazing eye at trekking game and spotted some amazing leopards at night. He would pick up the prints and lead us to amazing sightings. Chris was a walking encyclopedia of nature. Not only was his wealth of knowledge exceptional but his friendliness and people skills were remarkable. He could chat to us about nearly anything. Chris and viljoen love the bush. And that passion makes safaris more amazing. Even impala sightings become magical after you learn interesting facts and social structures of animals. I dont think chris/ viljoen were stumped by one question I asked them which ranged from animal hierarchy, anatomy biological cycles etc. and this coming from 2 doctors. Also these guides are not clock watchers. For instance we heard of the pangolin sighting and chris extended our night safari to fit this in. He also avidly followed his hunches/ 6th senses which often led to amazing animal sightings. Chris/ viljoen offered to adapt timing of safaris to suit our needs and wants. We were fortunate to be 3 to a safari vehicle with full social distancing. We have an evening prayer and they made sure that we stopped for this sunset prayer. Another issue showing how service orientated kapama is, is my lost and found gloves. I accidentally dropped my expensive ski gloves off the safari vehicle. I just mentioned this to viljoen and security tracesd it on the tracks the next day and handed to me. Viljoen ar southern camp selected the most amazing settings for our snack breaks. Just 2 extremely minor cons. One was that pools at buffalo camp/ southern camp were frigid. It was refreshing to use but you were icy after 15 mins. Admittedly this was late winter, but a heated pool would just make the amazing experience even more amazing. I am sure pool temperatures are suited to the baking summer. Second minor con which maybe management can raise with google maps is the resort location. It takes you to a side entrance. Also if you utilise Google maps in the reserve to find your lodge it took me on less traversed tracks. However the lodges direction boards are correct so maybe just avoid using Google maps and trust the signs in reserve. Last con is double edged. This lodge is normally prohibitively priced for local south Africans. Its normally geared for dollar paying clients. For the normal price of the lodge we could travel to many overseas destinations. That's the reason I chose to take advantage of amazing rates and specials now in lockdown. At present this is excellent value for money. But I think it would be optimal if management implements a SADC/ South African rate after lockdown so that we could some day return to this piece of wildlife heaven. If you are exhausted from covid stress and craving a vacation. You normally venture to exotic overseas countries but can't because of travel restrictions/ lockdown. Dont hesitate and book kapama - service is par excellence beyond 7 star. Choose southern camp for families and if you like modernity. But opt for buffalo camp if you want a warm 5 star guest house feel. Dont hesitate and book it.
