A has-been old lady
Regrettably, this has been a huge disappointment! I love emphasising good things about locations where we stay, but the only good I can say is that is spacious and sunsets are good. Wine was poured without asking us to taste, food was underwhelming with runny tummies the day after. White wine was not even chilled and no ice bucket provided. Our bathroom was extremely cold and our friends boiled in theirs.. cupboard doors broken/missing, mould on walls, unpainted repairs on walls etc etc. Simply cannot recommend this place, not even to my enemies…
Dissapointing issues. Not worth it unless enormous intervention
It saddens me when you return to the same place (apparently 5 stars) and as guests of the presidential suite, to convince yourself it could be better but it worsens. On our third visit, I had to offload six suitcases despite staff hanging around at entrance. Had to carry the bags up the ten or so stairs myself. No assistance. No fireplace- apparently looking for an overseas part (ignitor on the gas). We buy these locally. Underfloor heating not working (it is winter in Gauteng) and this being a presidential suite. No tomato cocktail available when my wife wanted a bloody mary. The reason: We had a function last night. We’re paying top money to stay here, why should one have to suffer as a result of poor planning?Telephones not working for half an hour. Children in room next door…. Enormous attitude from Karabo the moment I called as we were having hot water issues (trickling took about 40 mins to fill up) when I called. Again I phoned and insisted on her name but she refused. DSTV in children’s room not working. We received a welcome letter referring to a fruit basket which was non existent. Not acceptable for the price we paid. This is supposedly five stars but didn’t fee like it. The staff almost knocked off down the door whilst I was on an important phone call. Knocking once or twice fine, but really going for it is just uncalled for. Unrefined and not living up to standards of five stars. Even the clock was not set properly.
A very grand stay
We only stayed here one night after leaving our ROVOS rail trip so we didn’t use all the facilities to the most. This was clearly formerly the home of someone very wealthy and hence the rooms were enormous. Decoration was ok but because of the size of the room it didn’t feel homely. The rooms were clean and had everything we needed The hotel was quiet and it can fee, lonely in the restaurant. Given it’s out of town unless you have transport you will eat in. The menu was limited but only full meals. We had only wanted s small meal. As we needed something we ordered steak and lamb, both of which were excellent. My husband only asked for a glass of wine but it was a huge quantity. Great quality as with most wine in South Africa but a much higher mark up than all other hotels we stayed in. So ask the price before you order. The staff were very helpful and friendly.
We were looking for a Mothersday breakfast venue and I remembered the excellent experience my wife and I had here. True to form, again we were treated to a brilliant breakfast for the family. A private setting on the balcony complemented with a great continental and hot breakfast, together with great and friendly service completed an excellent experience. Always a good experience to visit and great value for money.
One night stay
Fkew in from London and had one night here before catching Rovos Rail to Cape Town. The hotel staff were friendly and welcoming, our room was large, and had all amenities, the one problem we had was a low water pressure when we tried to have a bath! Turned out the whole area had a problem! Sat by the pool for a couple of hours in the afternoon, but didn't swim as the pool looked a little green , dirty and looked like it hadn't been used for a while. We ate in the restaurant that night and they changed the menu to serve up a South African food. Kingklip for starter and a steak for mains, both extremely good. The wine was a little on the expensive side, but perhaps we should have asked how much before we drank it!
