This stylish, serene and welcoming beachside refuge provides an authentic taste of the Seychelles without breaking the bank.
Anyone looking for an away-from-it-all experience of the Seychelles without the high price tag of a private island resort will be enchanted by CaranaBeach Hotel. This quietly luxurious boutique property in the north of Mahé has been a hit, especially with couples. Its success lies in its intimate, laid-back atmosphere and its enchanting setting on one of the island’s loveliest beaches. The richly planted grounds help to add to the sense of privacy, while the chic-yet-unobtrusive buildings blend perfectly into the landscape.

Rooms
The 40 large, high-ceilinged rooms are arranged in 20 chalets draped around the gently sloping curve of the bay, with wooden decks providing sea and sunrise views. Inside, the breezy décor offers a contemporary take on a rustic beach hut, with pale wood floors, white walls and soft furnishings in a palette of soft blues and greys: muted echoes of the turquoise sea and granite boulders just outside. For simplicity, there are only two room types. Ocean View Pool Chalets have a deck with a private infinity-edge plunge pool and enough space for an inviting daybed and a couple of equally comfortable loungers. The Ocean View Chalets are smaller, and the terrace has a daybed but no pool. If you’re planning to spend the whole day by the beach anyway, the Ocean View Chalets’ lack of a private pool won’t be an issue.

Lorizon
The culinary day begins and ends at the hotel’s award-winning restaurant. Breakfast on the deck against a backdrop of sparkling sea and beach is a soul-soothing way to begin each morning, while the evening menu provides a sophisticated take on local flavours.
CaranaBeach Bar
The casual beach bar is a perfect place for a lazy lunch from the all-day menu of sharing plates, salads and more substantial offerings such as Creole fish curry. When it comes to drinks, the bartenders are on hand to conjure up an imaginative range of signature and international cocktails.
Be sure to try the house special cocktail, the Carana, an inventive and delicious blend of vodka, Triple Sec, orange and lime wedges, sugar syrup and curry leaves.

The small Sens Spa’s soothing treatments use only natural local ingredients such as coconut oil, cinnamon and vanilla. Book one of the signature massages, in the privacy of your own deck or at the spa, for an hour or more of scented bliss. In tune with the hotel’s ethos, there’s no gym or frantic roster of activities, but you can join a guided hike or hire a bicycle if you want to explore.
There isn’t a dive centre at the hotel, but dive trips can be arranged for qualified divers. Stand-up paddleboarding and surfing lessons, along with full-day snorkelling safaris to St Anne Marine Park, can be arranged.
All of the products used in the spa are natural, organic, cruelty-free and made by small local businesses. Many of the ingredients used in Lorizon, from eggs and cheese to pork and poultry, come from the owners’ small organic farm. The hotel regularly partners with Green Islands Foundation (GIF) on activities such as coastal clean-ups. There’s a rainwater collection system, and ‘grey water’ is cleaned and used for tasks such as irrigating the garden.
