The Maldives tops the list of favourite honeymoon destinations for 2020, closely followed by Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Bali and Thailand, according to a new report from honeymoon specialist Kuoni.

Other destinations on the up in the honeymoon bestsellers list  include the Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, the USA and Italy.

Average spend has gone up over the past three years with couples now investing an average of £7,695 on their dream trip, compared to just over £6,000 in 2017.

Kuoni has also seen the age of honeymooners rise over the past decade, with more couples in their mid to late thirties tying the knot. The company’s honeymoon experts also report that they are booking more couples in their 40s, 50s and 60s getting married for the second time.

It’s not unusual now for honeymoon bookings to include children, there has been a steady rise in honeymoon bookings which include either infants, toddlers or teenage children, as couples start their family first or get married for the second time.

Couples are increasingly pushing the boat out on their honeymoon with romantic experiences, with some of the most requested being a barbeque on a deserted island in the Maldives, dining by a candlelit waterfall in Thailand, sharing a double bed in the sky with Qatar Airways QSuite and a hot air balloon flight over the Maasai Mara in Kenya.

Outdoor bathrooms, luxury tree-houses and spa treatments with a view are also frequently requested, according to Kuoni’s honeymoon experts.

The human touch is still central to honeymoon bookings, with 82% of honeymoons booked with the help of an expert in a store. Very few couples book online preferring the expertise of a specialist during a personal consultation who can advise on the latest luxury resorts, multi-centre itineraries and upgrade options.

Top 10 honeymoon destinations according to Kuoni are:

  1. Maldives
  2. Mauritius
  3. Sri Lanka
  4. Bali
  5. Thailand
  6. Seychelles
  7. South Africa
  8. Tanzania
  9. USA
  10. Italy
