Lunch at Rabelos
We had lunch at the Rabelos Restaurant on a day trip to Pinhao. The restaurant was very tastefully decorated. The staff was very friendly and professional. The chef sent out a cheese platter to welcome us. The food was very good. We had cream of vegetable soups and the sucking pig appetizer. The pork loin and bacalhau asado was great. We topped the meal with a Portuguese milk pudding and coffees. This hotel is part of Taylor Croft. Great views of the river and the vineyards.
Only Great for Instagram
This hotel came at high expectations for us after an expansive search of the availability within the Douro Valley, the reviews of photographs online, as well as the elevated price tag. Unfortunately, our expectations were most certainly not met. We arrived in the Douro Valley to celebrate our recent wedding, on our honeymoon. My husband and I had originally booked a standard room, and were upgraded to a junior suite — the junior suite was spacious, and offered a nice outdoor terrace. During the day, we wandered around the Duoro Valley, visiting nearby wineries. In the evening, we had supper at the hotel restaurant, due to numerous local restaurants being closed. Our meal in the hotel restaurant was wonderful — I had duck while my husband had lamb. However, after returning to our room, this is when we started to notice that this five star hotel, was not a five star hotel at all. Of note: 1. The electrical outlets in the washroom do not work, and will not work. The front desk informed us that the outlets have been turned off — therefore, if you are a lady who wishes to dry / straighten / curl your hair, your only option is to do so outside of the washroom 2. The thermometer is at a set temperature for the entire hotel — if you wish to adjust the temperature, you cannot — you can only adjust the fan speed. As of November, the air conditioning does not work in the rooms, we were provided a small room fan. 3. The “sound proof walls” are most certainly not sound proof at all. Despite our stay being on a Monday night, we could here neighboring guests turning on their shower, talking and laughing, amongst other things. 4. The provided in-room hair dryer stopped working after two-three minutes of drying my hair, outside of the washroom due to the lack of electrical outlets. In conclusion, this is a great place if you want Instagram photos — if you want a trouble free, five star stay, look elsewhere.
Definitely not 5 stars!
Our expectations visiting this hotel were very high, given the good reviews and the photos. We were very disappointed. We stayed in the junior suite (normale price €290,— per night). How ever the room should really not carry the name of a suite. The room was separated from the adjacent room by just a normal door. We had noisy neighbors and we could hear every word they said during their conversation. Furthermore the AC didn’t work. The reception told me they disabled the AC in the winter. But in a 5 star hotel I would say the guests should be able to decide whether they want AC or not. Eventually we got a 20% discount on the rates. Would not recommend!
Exceptional Hotel I’m the Douro Valley.
Fabulous hotel in the Douro. Relaxing. Our room was spacious and comfortable. The best part was the delicious and unique dinner. The waiters were attentive and informative. If your luggage is heavy you may want to take smaller bags into the hotel. Strangely the reception staff is not as engaging as the other personnel we encountered at the hotel.
Chipped glass at the bar…sharp enough to slice the lip - server shrugged his shoulders and asked if we were guest of hotel or just “dropping in”. Beautiful setting, lovely pool, quite wonderful room, somehow, I still felt like the main character of Pygmalion!
