Loved this hotel - and we’ve rebooked!
All the good things you’ve read are true! Due to Covid, it was inevitably a very quiet time, but that’s just what we wanted and needed. Room was spotless as were all public areas. Sea views were mesmerising, and the night views of Funchal lit up with Christmas lights were spectacular. Excellent, helpful and friendly staff. When our (self)-booked taxi to the airport did not arrive, we didn’t even have a moment’s worry as the front desk staff sorted another immediately! Do try the local cuisine; there are many really good, traditional and typical Madeiran restaurants within a stone’s throw of the hotel. One of our favourites was just outside the driveway ... walk up the driveway/road, turn right and there it is! Don’t bother with an organised trip to Monte botanical gardens ... far better (and cheaper) to get a taxi/bus to the cable car station and do it yourself. The hotel front desk sell cable-car tickets. Not to be missed. We have rebooked The Cliff Bay for December to get a week of sun before Christmas.
Had a great time
Now I really missed my stay at Hotel The Cliff Bay a few weeks ago. It was a well run hotel with fantastic location. I booked a partial seaview room but when I arrived, I thought I would upgrade to a higher floor seaview by paying more. Every day I woke up with fantastic view of the Atlantic. The hotel is well designed with a beautiful garden with lovely exotic flowers, several pools at various level right on the cliff and by the sea. Unfortunately the hot tub was not in operation. The hotel staff were polite and helpful. Their food was probably one of the best in town. The only two complaints (1) the comforter was not that good for December weather (2) the brown carpet was rather ugly, but can’t do anything about it.
1st time here but hopefully not the last
Fabulous hotel and staff. Suites big with all amenities, well maintained. clean and comfortable. Breakfasts wonderful with huge welcome every morning, good spread to choose from, will cater for any request. Very COVID aware, with regular cleaning and mask by all staff Cannot praise this property enough, nothing is too much for them to deal with. Keep up the good work and I hope numbers increase when flights start to bring in tourists
Piece of Paradise
This was my first trip to Madeira and staying in this hotel made the whole experience a truly enjoyable one (despite the pandemic). Hand sanitisers all throughout the hotel and temperature taken whenever you return to the hotel. Face masks worn by all in communal spaces. We had a room overlooking the Atlantic ocean and Funchal. The views were breathtaking....sitting on the balcony, sipping a glass of Madeiran wine, listening to the ocean...pure bliss! The hotel itself is beautiful. Welcoming and friendly staff (nothing is too much trouble). Half board is certainly worth it as the food in the Rose Restaurant is scrumptious. The Yellowbus tour stop is right outside the hotel and there is an area called the Lido about 10 minutes away which has shops and restaurants. I will definitely returning to Madeira and staying at the Cliff Bay. Worth every penny!
Perfect base for your Madeira getaway
We recently stayed at the Cliff Bay Hotel for 5 days. We decided to spoil ourselves on one of their upper floor rooms, and we were upgraded to a Funchal View room. Firstly, it's reassuring to see how strictly they apply covid restrictions. While this may make the check-in process a little slower, knowing that they're doing for the benefit of all really helps. Our temperature was checked at entry, the check-in desk was cleaned before we got to it, and everyone wears masks and works from behind a screen. Our room was sublime. If you enjoy views, ensuring you're staying on an upper floor is well worth it. We had a beautiful view of the ocean towards Funchal. It made for amazing sunrises (when not overcast). The room is well appointed. In addition, the bathroom enjoys a separate shower and bath, as well as double vanity. This ensured that we had a "home from home." While all amenities were not open due to the pandemic, it's clear that they make it as comfortable as possible. During our stay, only sauna's & jacuzzi's were not operating. Fortunately, the gym was open which is a good place to work off any indulgences. The hotel offers 2 pool areas - one at the ground floor of the hotel and the other at sea level. It seems that not all restaurants are open right now, but options remain excellent. Breakfast is served in the Rose Garden restaurant, lunch overlooking the pool and the sea, while dinner is back in the Rose Garden restaurant. Alternatively, nearby options in Funchal abound. The hotel also provides access to the Avista restaurant which offers more fine dining experiences. Finally, the evening entertainment - live musicians - provide a lovely way to round off the day. While the hotel is not "modern" the old world service & friendliness you receive more than make up for an amazing stay. Highly recommended.
