Another return visit to the Cliff Bay
My 7th return visit to the Cliff Bay, and my first in 2020 the year of the Coronavirus! It was touch and go as to whether the holiday was on with the ever changing UK rules on European travel. On arrival the usual warm welcome, only this time with the by now familiar temperature checks, signage, screens and mandatory wearing of face coverings in public areas. I book half board to eat in the Rose Garden which was buffet service on previous holidays. Now it is table service with a 4 course meal with choices. I found this a more enjoyable experience, pacing the courses to have a chat with the ever friendly staff. Sun decks , sun loungers and swimming pools open. The only closures being sauna steam room, jacuzzi etc. The adjoining Les Suites is now fully open with the added attraction of the Avista Restaurant, Bars and infinity pool. I'd thoroughly recommend this hotel, and Madeira Island in general for Covid safe relaxation.
An Enchanting and Magical Hotel.
Cliff Bay and its recent addition of Les Suites is most definitely the leading hotel in Funchal. General Manager, Antonio Pais has created a wonderful relationship with clients and staff alike and is very visible in the hotel unlike many other less able G.M’S. Staff are all pleasant and remember the names and requirements of returning guests. Excellent breakfasts & dinner are served in Avista, the recently created restaurant which has stunning views over the Atlantic. Food is creative, well presented and always warm ..not always the case in lesser establishments. ( See separate review). This is our 27th. visit to this magical hotel which is a perfect Mecca for complete relaxation and splendid facilities. Gallo D’Oro the 2 star Michelin restaurant within the hotel was not open due to low occupancy at this time of Covid 19 but hopefully it will reopen soon and before we return in early November 2020. Chef Benoit Sinthon creates amazing flavour packed dishes which could be best described as culinary miracles well worthy of the rating by Michelin. If you are looking for a five star experience in luxurious surroundings there is no better place to choose than Cliff Bay. Very highly recommended with no criticisms at all. Well done Antonio and your wonderfully caring staff....we adore Cliff Bay and, God willing, we will always be regular, loyal and appreciative guests.
Better and better - look no place else!
Very spontaneous fourth visit to this outstanding hotel and absolutely no regrets. We don’t know how you manage it but each stay with you our experience gets better and better. We felt safe and secure here; temperature was taken often, single use cutlery for serving at the buffets, strict mask policy indoors and a one way system in the busy areas. All of the staff here are so friendly, so helpful and so welcoming. Nothing is too much to ask. The gardens are a delight to walk around and the pool areas immaculate. I would rather spend 4 days here than two weeks elsewhere - it’s truly magical.
Another great stay
The hotel was excellent as always - sea view/Funchal view room, the food, the hospitality all first class. The staff know how to treat their hotel guests. The first opportunity I get to go back I will be booking another trip!
Stayed here for 6 nights and was very impressed. There is a really great ambience in the hotel and a genuine attitude of caring for guests. First have to say that the Covid measures in place are very good. Temperature checks, plenty of hand sanitizer, masks in public areas and good distancing at pool and in restaurant. Felt very safe the whole time. Fantastic team at entrance (doing the temperature checks) and front desk. Room (side sea-view) was a very nice size and had lovely views. Good size bathroom with Rituals toiletries- but a lack of plug sockets (none next to the bed and only one that wasn't being used for a lsmp) and no USB chargers was an issue- difficult to keep things charged. Thank you to the fabulous housekeeping team - especially Tina who took care of my room. Pool area is lovely with a choice of pools, sea access and lots of different spots for sunbathing as well as the main terrace. The pool team are amazing, there to help with an umbrella or sunbed before you even know you need help! But the drinks service is hit and miss, and over-priced! Sometimes someone will come and take your order, other times you have to go up to the Restaurant to order. Beers were often warm when they arrived. And you are charged 5.50 euros for a supposedly 50cl beer but which is served in a plastic glass which is no more than 40cl Breakfast is OK. The service is excellent and I imagine the buffet was fantastic before Covid. Now there are good Covid measures in place (e.g. single-use serving spoons) but i guess it llimits what can be offered. (I also ate in Avista and The Cliff bar, will so separate reviews). Overall, a really fantastic stay in a fantastic hotel with a great team- I've already booked to come back. If they could provide more charging points in the room and fix the drink service at pool it really would be perfect!
