Quinta da Casa Branca is set in exquisite botanical gardens with a large banana plantation, and has been a member of The Small Luxury Hotels of the World for more than a decade. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, the award-winning glass architecture integrates beautifully into the natural environment and highlights the wonderful garden views. This charming hotel dates back to the mid-19th Century when the renowned wine-producing Leacock family first planted the gardens, and it’s a refreshing alternative to more modern hotels. Spend an afternoon enjoying a revitalising spa treatment, or just wandering the superb gardens. Nestled amongst pretty bougainvillea, you’ll find the freshwater pool and the elegant Garden Pavilion restaurant; it was built using glass, wood and green marble, and is a peaceful spot for buffet breakfast, à la carte lunch and afternoon tea. The Manor House is at the front of the property, with six luxurious suites and The Dining Room; it has an al fresco terrace where you can indulge in delicious à la carte and table d’hôte meals for dinner. There’s also Casa da Quinta Bar & Restaurant, a great spot for a more informal bistro dinner. Twin Garden View Rooms are on the ground floor with a terrace opening onto the gardens. This renowned resort is in a spectacular and dramatic clifftop spot, with enchanting Atlantic Ocean views. It’s surrounded by beautifully manicured tropical gardens, where you’ll find plenty of secluded corners shaded by palm trees. After an indulgent Champagne breakfast, take the lift down from the clifftop and make your way to the sunbathing platform by the hotel’s jetty to enjoy views across the bay to Funchal, or there’s direct sea access for swimming and snorkelling. The pool area is equally gorgeous – cool off in one of the two pools or grab a terrace table at the Blue Lagoon Snack Bar & Restaurant for delicious fresh salads and barbecued fish. Dining options are excellent – for bold Mediterranean flavours, choose The Rose Garden buffet restaurant, or for something special, you have Madeira’s first two-Michelin-starred restaurant, Il Gallo d’Oro. Chef Benoît Sinthon combines fresh local ingredients to create a fabulously aromatic menu. After dinner, it’s time for a Madeira Night cocktail and live music at Le Cliff Bar & Bistro. Rooms have views of the land, sea or Funchal. Upgrade to one of the lovely upper-floor Superior Sea View Rooms to enjoy complimentary soft drinks from the minibar and à la carte breakfast at Il Gallo d’Oro.
This chic boutique hotel is on a romantic cobbled street flanking the Palace of Jesuits, and is made up of five heritage buildings ranging from the 18th to 20th Centuries. The location is second to none, within walking distance of the city’s historical sites, churches, restaurants and museums. The hotel is ruggedly beautiful, with exposed stone arches and wooden rafters, but it also has contemporary bedrooms, modern art and plush extras as standard. The decked rooftop has a heated outdoor pool and solarium with panoramic harbour views, while the Til Spa has a hydrotherapy circuit, indoor pool, sauna and Turkish bath. There’s also a library and coffee and cocktail bar. You’ll be in a prime spot and will no doubt want to savour the historic town’s wonderful restaurants, but if you’ve spent a day seeing the sights (the hotel offers bike hire), it’s always a pleasure to know you can come back to an intimate little on-site restaurant. Tipografia certainly delivers, with a Mediterranean menu and an enchanting internal courtyard for al fresco dining. Rooms create a boutique feel with soft furnishings and city or courtyard views. Twin Rooms have double or twin beds. Twin Deluxe Rooms have a balcony with seating and courtyard or city views. Junior Suites are larger and have an adjacent living area, while Suites are even more spacious and have a separate living room.
This sophisticated west-coast hotel is a great option if you’re looking to explore more of Madeira than just its capital, Funchal. After a super-scenic airport transfer with views over the Atlantic Ocean you’ll reach the small port town of Calheta, where the multi-tiered Saccharum sits against a rocky mountain backdrop. Calheta was one of Madeira’s first areas to have golden sand imported from Morocco, and the hotel is only a stone’s throw from a neat little man-made beach and Marina da Calheta. Saccharum was built on the site of an old sugar cane mill; head to Galeria 1425 on the ground floor to see some of the immaculately preserved machinery. Add in bare-brick pillars and walls displaying photos of the island’s sugar cane history, and you’ll feel like you’ve discovered a secret art gallery. The décor here was perfected by famous local interior designer Nini Andrade Silva, and the rooms have a stylish vibe – think sleek wooden floors, olive-green panelling and exquisite close-ups of sugar cane printed onto the walls. All rooms have balconies and superb marble bathrooms with walk-in showers, while some have kitchenettes. Choose one of the Suites to really soak up the sweeping sea views and to enjoy the hotel's Premium Experience – it includes extras like free unlimited use of the spa, plus exclusive access to The Club lounge on the top floor and the Premium Sundeck area with Indonesian-style sun loungers, Jacuzzi, showers and massage area. There’s plenty to do in Calheta – we recommend visiting the internationally acclaimed Casa das Mudas Art Centre, trying local delicacies at the various restaurants or just taking a stroll along the seafront. The hotel has a great range of facilities and dining options, too. Indulge in a detoxifying scrub or hot stone massage at the sumptuous Saccharum Spa before choosing from three restaurants and four bars. The eighth floor has the airy Fly Lounge Bar as well as a rooftop infinity pool; sit at the water’s edge and gaze out over the ocean before grabbing a well-earned drink.
