Such a shame, the food let's the hotel down
We stayed at the Vidamar as it was the venue of our daughters wedding. I had visited the hotel before the pandemic to look at the venue and it was lovely. But our experience when we stayed for 11 days was not great. Most of our complaints are regarding the selection and coldness of hot food. Constantly food items were cold, the hot breakfast was always cold and the evening meal was no better. So much so we ate 4 times in the hotel and we were on a half board basis. We did speak to staff members and they were not interested. The hotel ran out of certain types of alcohol which two days later it has still not replenished, Disaronno, Archers even apple juice it ran out of. We did ask to speak to the F&B Manager but that never happened. We were so concerned about the food at the wedding but somehow it was great. If only it could have been for the rest of our stay. The pool bar food is good because it is served to order so it is always hot. If you stayed here and were only bed and breakfast you would probably think it was OK. But it did not deliver 5 star standards like it should have. Yes I understand Covid has been an issue but to try to get back to normal and be substandard is not going to entice people to return to the hotel. We have been coming to the algarve for many years and have great experiences that we brought a home here, but we were told to attend the wedding we had to stay at the hotel. If thus had been our first experience in the algarve we would not be going back.
Avoid if you’re expecting a 5* resort
Please don’t stay here if you expect a 5 * experience. We’ve stayed here before and had a great holiday. Sadly it’s gone downhill at a rate of knots. The rooms are still of a good standard, although could do with a kick of paint, and the location is superb. That’s were it ends. There are only two restaurants open; one a buffet restaurant ( which is more a cafe). Everyone using the same serving utensils which is alarming in the current conditions. The food is substandard - since when have sausages been a dinner option in a 5* resort? Soup lacked any taste whatsoever, food was cold, lamb was tough. Formica tables and cutlery in a paper bag! Really! Guests had little regard for dress code or requirements for face coverings. Please don’t continue to market yourselves as something you no longer are. Holiday booked through Jet2 who also marketed this as a 5* holiday - I’ve yet to receive a response from them.
Great, relaxing holiday!
Location - the hotel is grouped with other hotels right on the edge of a conservation area and has clear views to the sea. There is short boardwalk directly from the hotel to the beach. It is perfectly placed for a quiet holiday away from the town of Albufeira. It is only a ten-minute taxi ride into town – we used Uber and it was around 10 euros. There seemed to be quite a lot of parking if you had a car. If you don’t have a car, the open top bus stops right outside the hotel if you want a bit of a guided tour of the area – it was a nice excursion (about two hours round trip) and we got off in Albufeira and had lunch on one day. The beach was wonderful, uncrowded, and a couple of great beach bars (beer 3 euro!) and sunbeds for hire. You can take really long walks either way along the shoreline. There are also a number of boardwalks to walk along that take you further up the coast. We read online that there are some great restaurants along the beach but we didnt try them as we were half board. Hotel - the hotel is very modern and clean with great public areas – the hotel reception and bar area is very impressive. As others have said it did feel a bit odd having the bar area in reception – it wasn’t very conducive to settling down with an evening of cocktails as felt more like a waiting area with lots of comings and goings. There were a number of bars leading off from the reception area, but these were not in use – they looked like they would have a better atmosphere – maybe in high season they are open. We tried a few cocktails and all of them were excellently mixed and perfectly presented. The grounds and pool are spacious and well maintained. The main pool is huge and there were plenty of sunbeds, with a further, separate area under the palm trees with loungers to sit on. The Mar Club was closed off – not sure if that is because it was October or covid related. It didn’t really matter as there was plenty of space in the main area, but I think it would be good during the high season for those wanting a quiet secluded area. We would have liked a table tennis area as there is plenty of room but sadly they don’t have one! the spa looked lovely but we didnt use it as the weather was so spectacular we wanted to be outside as much as possible. Room - it is definitely worth booking the pool or garden view rooms as it is lovely sitting on your balcony in the morning. You can see the sea in the distance – we were on floor two which was fine – you probably need to be higher if you want to see the sea properly. The rooms are quite simply spectacular! Spacious, modern, and kept very clean – the housekeeping staff do an amazing job. The showers are excellent and the whole bathroom area is very luxurious. Bed was huge and very comfortable and we didn’t hear any noise with the balcony doors closed. There is a flatscreen TV with abut 60 channels, but we weren’t in the room much so only picked up a bit of BBC World news. There is a minifridge and a kettle, and two bottles of water on arrival. There isn’t any tea or coffee but you could ask for these at reception. We had our own! There is a little shop where you can buy water, milk, and a few essentials – it has limited stock but is useful. The room is definitely 5 star standard. Food - the dine around wasn’t fully operational so there was only the buffet restaurant or the Italian restaurant open. The Italian menu is quite limited so we stuck with the buffet. We have booked many of these 5 star resorts that offer buffet style dining and we always know what to expect – the buffet at the VidaMar was above standard in our view. There was plenty of choice, the quality of the food was good and very fresh. We had something different every evening – there was so much choice for starters, mains, and desserts. A special mention for the pancake section for breakfasts! The drinks are reasonably priced and we didn’t have any wines that we didn’t like. It is true that the food is not “5 star” in terms of what we might all think – but that type of dining is for high end hotels, silver service, or Michelin starred restaurants. When signing up for buffet style dining, it needs to be remembered that the hotel is catering for 500 + guests at each meal. If you want 5 star dining then you must be prepared to pay 5 star prices! Staff - all the staff were very friendly and helpful from the concierge, reception staff, pool staff, all those that work tirelessly in the restaurant, and I think a special thank you to the housekeeping – the hotel was immaculate and our rooms sparkling clean every day! I think at the end of the day it comes down to how much you paid on whether you think you had good value – we booked with Secret Escapes and couldn’t believe what we got for our money – we were delighted with everything! We would go back again and definitely preferred being out of the town! Nothing to do with the hotel as I think it is a Government requirement but all staff wore face masks - guests were not required to and it was personal choice. I think over 80% of guests did not wear masks. As masks are more for protecting others it felt unfair that staff and guests were not treated equally – staff putting themselves more at risk than the guests. Should be same rule for both.
Poor Vidimar Algarve experience
Facilities are good as was the location. Buffet food was poor and every dish was cold, includes breakfast and evening meal. Disappointed with the staff’s attitude, never took responsibility for queries, or complaints always someone else’s problem. All staff seem to have an attitude and not making you have that holiday feeling. Reception bar only opens after 6 pm, if you want a drink you have to go to the pool bar. Not a place I would go back to in a hurry.
close to the beach and beautiful room
The hotel is fairly big and was also very well booked while we stayed there for 3 nights. good points: - The room is beautiful. The bed is very comfortable. The bathroom is also well equipped. I loved the balcony with the view onto the huge palm trees - The nearness to the beach with the direct access! I loved it! To me Salgados beach is one of the best on the whole Algarve less good points: - they advertise with 4 restaurants. But only 2 were open.It was impossible to get a table at the a la carte - Italian restaurant - the buffet food was good, but sadly everything was cold. Even dishes they just replaced were cold - the atmosphere at the buffet restaurant was not upscale at all, more like a mensa at a huge company - they advertise with 4 bars, just one was open. the one at the reception, didn't look inviting at all. - pool is not heated Although there are points that are less than optimal, I would still return to this hotel
