Looks like a lovely hotel - but completely unreasonable during pandemic
From the website and review, this hotel looks like a great place to stay while visting Machu Picchu. We were originally intending to do the Inca Trek to Machu Picchu and then spend some time in Aguaclientes afterwards. Unfortunately, our trip was scheduled for start of September, which is no longer a possibility due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. We did book a non-refundable room with the Sumaq Hotel before the outbreak of the pandemic and had no intention of cancelling or changing our trip. However, the Peruvian government has extended the state of emergency through the end of September and Peruvian borders are still closed to international travellers. Despite these circumstances, the Sumaq Hotel has informed us through our travel agency that because our booking is non-refundable and the hotel is still open for business, we are out of luck. I would suggest to anyone looking for somewhere to stay to look for a hotel that is more customer friendly. We have rescheduled our trip to Peru and Machu Picchu to next year and we will 100% not be staying at this hotel.
Outstanding Hotel -- One of the Best on My Trip
The SUMAQ is a beautiful, modern hotel on the river and a few blocks walk from downtown. My room was gorgeous and overlooked the river. 2 queen beds, desk, table & 2 chairs, huge granite bath, free internet, free safe and free breakfast. Lots of extra touches -- our group had a welcome drink in the Lobby of goldenberry iced tea, and there was a welcome dessert in my room of chocolate and lucuma. Gourmet dinner with a nice presentation. Started with a sugar cane cocktail. For appetizer, I had Corn Pie (oxtail and cheese in stuffed pastry with mushroom gravy). Entre was chicken breast coated in quinoa. Dessert was a lava cake with lucuma liquid and coffee ice cream. Everything was delicious. Great breakfast buffet the next morning with different choices than the normal ones. Had Andean Toast = French Toast stuffed with cheese and elderberry jam. Goldenberry yogurt parfait. Prickly pear fruit added to my granola. Plus bacon & eggs, pastries, banana, etc. I stayed at many terrific hotels during my 4 weeks in South America -- SUMAQ was one of the best on my trip!!! Highly recommend it.
Beautiful hotel in a beautiful setting on the river
This is a very well designed hotel--modern--that fits into the setting. The river is really impressive and roaring down the valley. the mountain behind the hotel is impressive. the lobby is small, but inviting. The staff is friendly, personable, and helpful. Check in is easy for groups--they have had practice! The rooms are really attractive and well designed--large with a very nice bathroom. The hotel has earplugs (they didn't tell us, but we found them on the nightstand) for the trains that run behind the hotel--they can be very loud, but do not run all n9ght. We liked the interior views of the gardens built into the side of the mountain. They are very attractive and well done. The restaurant is good for both dinner and the breakfast. We really like this one--it was working smoothly on all cylinders. We had a small problem with the TV & hairdryer--both were repaired instantly. There is no air conditioning (the architect's commitment to the environment and the fact that the hotel is at 8,000 feet) and the staff had a great quiet fan brought to the room when we were out for drinks. This is a good hotel that merits your consideration to take advantage of the option to have two separate trips to Machu Picchu--with smaller crowds (the day travelers leave in the afternoon, and do not arrive until lunchtime). Crowds are an issue here. Fortantly, we were here at low season and it was not a problem, but that is not always the case!
Pretty Machu Pichu Hotel
This is a very nice hotel situated beside a roaring river. The river is magnificent! We had a pleasant overnight stay here. The staff was very helpful and professional. A highlight was dinner, which was delicious and beautifully presented. Our server, Eduardino, was truly special. He gave us good recommendations and was generally so upbeat and cheerful that we enjoyed the dinner all the more. I'd stay here again. It's a unique spot.
Vist to Machu Picchu
The best hotel in Aguas Calientes, awesome view, extraordinary service, specially Luis the bartender and Chef Marco, they show us how to make pisco sour and Peruvian ceviche, soooooo delicious!!!!! All the staff was extremely kind and help us make our dream vacation a memorable one.
