This resort is a mountaintop oasis combining Omani tradition and VIP glamour.

The experience at this resort starts even before you arrive. A 4x4 transfer is needed to navigate the undulating roads leading to its setting at the top of a mountain, with increasingly impressive views the closer you get. Designed in the style of an ancient Omani fort, this six-acre resort is the highest in the Middle East. It combines staggering vistas of the rugged, russet-coloured canyon with an elevated level of service that suits its VIP regulars – it was billed as one of the world’s most remarkable places to stay on BBC’s Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby.

Head to the spa where rose and frankincense rituals await. The thermal area includes aroma sauna and steam rooms, experience showers, hammam and an outdoor garden. At Diana’s Point, a glass-walled platform named after Princess Diana who once stopped in the area on a day trip, yoga is a popular way for guests to soak up the tranquillity at sunrise.

Take a guided walk to one of the nearby villages and learn about local life or get up close to the rocky terrain on the hotel’s climbing route and zip line experience.

The first Oman hotel to achieve Green Growth 2050 certification, Anantara works with local suppliers to source produce for its restaurants, conserves energy use and is eliminating single-use plastic. Through guest contributions they also supports children with special needs, local environmental groups and animal rescue centres.
