This week, let us take you to the wildlife-rich savannahs of Kenya for less. Our iconic Governors’ Safari is one of our most popular itineraries and a truly unforgettable adventure that takes you to Rift Valley lakes and the rolling plains of Kenya’s most iconic national park, the Maasai Mara.
Following an overnight stay at the Eka Hotel in Nairobi, you’ll head off in a 4x4 vehicle towards the shores of Lake Naivasha. Your home for the next three nights is Loldia House, a converted farmhouse that’s full of character that has just nine bedrooms and beautiful gardens. You’ll have two full days to explore the lakes and landscapes of the Great Rift Valley and spot the region’s most iconic wildlife – the flocking flamingos and the wallowing hippos – before boarding a light aircraft for the next leg of your journey.
In the Mara, you’ll stay at one of our all-time favourite properties – the authentic and eco-conscious Governors’ Camp. You can’t get much closer to the action than at this tented camp. It’s hidden in the forest just a stone’s throw from the winding Mara River which is home to hippos and Nile crocs and the drinking spot of choice for an abundance of wildlife. The camp is unfenced so don’t be surprised to see a family of ellies or dazzle of zebras passing through, gazelles grazing or even a cheetah or lion just a couple of hundred yards away from your private deck (but don’t worry, you’ll be escorted to and from your tent after dark). There’s nowhere better than Governors’ if you’re looking for an exceptional game viewing experience. The camp was featured in the iconic BBC’s Big Cat Diaries series and more recently in an episode of Dynasties, both of which followed the highs and lows of the resident Marsh pride of lions.
The stand-out experience on this week-long adventure is the early morning hot air balloon ride over the Maasai Mara. Drift upwards as the sun rises and the sky gleams with a bright pink-orange haze keeping an eye out for herds of buffalo and graceful giraffes as you soar above the plains. You’ll then come back down to earth for a Champagne breakfast on the wild side.
During your stay in the Maasai Mara, you have the option to upgrade to the intimate 4½-star Little Governors, a favourite with honeymooning couples, or the 5-star Governors’ Il Moran, a luxury camp hidden in the trees with game viewing right on the doorstep. For price information, see below.
