Vancouver Island is a wildlife lover’s dream with whales and bears drawn to the region’s food-rich waters. This is a two-part experience from Tofino which consists of a whale-watching cruise on a 12-passenger Zodiac in the open waters of the Pacific, during which you may spot gray or humpback whales, seals and sea otters. During the second part of the tour you’ll cruise along the coast of the Clayoquot Sound during low tide to see the island’s resident black bears.

On your way back to the city, stop at the Britannia Mine Museum for a train ride through a historic mine.
For a supplement you can head out for a boat trip (on a 9m rigid inflatable Zodiac) on the beautiful Howe Sound, North America's southern-most fjord. During your time on the water you may see harbour seals and various bird species at the Christie Islet Bird Sanctuary. BC Ferries operate car ferry routes along British Columbia's Pacific Coast. They also connect the Vancouver area with a couple of destinations on Vancouver Island. The most popular route is between Tsawwassen (approximately 30 minutes south of Vancouver airport) and Swartz Bay which sits at the tip of the Saanich Peninsula and is about half an hour from central Victoria. If you wish to tavel further up the Vancouver Island coast, cutting the driving time to the likes of Campbell River and the west coast towns of Tofino and Ucluelet, you can take the ferry from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver to Duke Point in Nanaimo.

Travel by 4x4 and head out in to the wilderness to search for black bears. Whistler and Blackcomb are home to approximately 50 bears who have adapted to live in these ski area habitats. Travel through forests and meadows and past streams and take short walks to the known bear feeding areas, rub trees and old trees where bears have hibernated during the winter.
Traversing the valley between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, the incredible PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola offers 360 views of the Coast Range peaks and mountain resorts below. The gondola’s span is 2.7 miles and its record-breaking achievements include being the longest and highest lift in the world.
