The staff are all welcoming and friendly and spoilt our children with fun and treats. Spotless hotel and incredible views of Mt Cook and plenty to do inside and out. Already booked our next trip, thank you
Luxury overlooking Mount Cook
We stayed three nights in a 9th floor room with a magnificent view of Mount Cook. The room came with a telescope to study the mountain. Everything is of high quality including the food. The dining service is a little slow but I expect it is not easy to get staff in such a remote place. Breakfast is excellent with good choice of cooked items. Good information about local walks which are of varying length and difficulty. We did some short ones and both gave great views of the mountains and glaciers.
Stunning and secluded
The Hermitage is a valuable asset to New Zealand, in honour of the Mount Cook range and intrepid climbers including Edmund Hillary. Each room has the awesome view toward the mountain, framed like a stunning work of art. No need for any other visual media, for sure! We stayed two nights and watched the etherial mood of the sky shift with shadows and cloud, sunlight and snow reflections. We had a telescope provided in the room to get a close up look at the mountains and the stars and moon at night. Our week long vacation in the south island found the culinary highlight with a meal in the Alpine Lodge, highly recommended! The entire stay was clean, well-staffed and comfortable.
Expensive but worth the experience
The view was tremendous, staff were helpful and friendly. Not sure that you need to pay top dollar for the 9th or 10th floor if you can get something immediately below but too far down may not provide quite the same panorama. Snowline Bar coffee/croissant/muffin deal was good value for breakfast (perhaps why it is not widely publicised compared to main dining room). Large number of walks to choose from : the three hour plus Hooker Valley track is one of the best (and does not require heavy tramping gear - just good walking shoes)
We've been coming to The Hermitage regularly for 12 years and the new general manager has been putting his mark on the place. He's available, talks to guests, asks for feedback and appears very genuine. Last time we came he'd been in the job 2 weeks and a lot of the food and beverage just wasn't smooth. This time.. What a difference six months makes. Superb food and slick, friendly, knowledgeable service staff. I love having cooked fresh dishes at breakfast but still being able to peruse continental at leisure. Dinner service was fabulous. We had a waiter called Perfect and he really was. Friendly and genuine, great food suggestions, checking in with us regularly but not invasive to our conversation or experience. Highly recommend a la carte at night. Altogether superb.
