Hapuku Lodge, Kaikoura
If you’ve ever dreamed of living in a treehouse and feeling close to nature then this country retreat is the place for you. The surroundings of this contemporary lodge are picture-perfect, with the dramatic Kaikoura mountains and beautiful coastline vying for your attention. The lodge has been thoughtfully constructed from stone and wood to complement the natural environment and it is fully committed to sustainable practices. Kaikoura is renowned for its spectacular scenery and maritime activities and the focus at the lodge is all about nature and relaxation. Spot native birds such as the Piwakawaka (New Zealand fantail) and watch deer grazing in the paddocks, swim a few laps in the pool or borrow one of the lodge’s mountain bikes. Learn to surf at nearby Mangamaunu surf break, kayak around the inlets, book a fishing trip, or go whale watching. You could pack a picnic to take on a hike, or learn about the native flora on a botanical tour of the local bush.
There’s a relaxed atmosphere in the dining room and guests are welcome to chat with the chefs and watch them as they prepare simple and delicious dishes using produce sourced locally whenever possible. The lodge has its own organic kitchen garden, olive grove, vineyard and farm. Guests can enjoy three-course dinners with three choices per course that often include local game and seafood.
All rooms and suites boast spellbinding views of snow-capped mountains and the rugged coastline. The charming Tree Houses are wooden houses perched on stilts at least ten metres above the ground in the canopy of a native Kanuka grove. Curl up by the small fireplace or relax in your spa bath, and enjoy the spectacular views. The Upper Branch Tree Houses are perfect for couples and the Family Tree Houses have two bedrooms. If you prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground then you should opt for one of the spacious Lodge Rooms and Suites which feature a Japanese soaking tub and balcony or terrace.
