Tucked in a narrow building on Queen Street in the centre of Auckland’s shopping district, the Grand Windsor is one of those hotels that you might not spot at first glance. But this boutique hideaway has undergone significant refurbishment and is now a fantastic city option. The entrance leading to the reception has been decked out with marble and a glitzy gold chandelier; rooms and suites have been individually styled on the personal jewellery collection of Wallis Simpson, later the Duchess of Windsor. Each of the rooms has a range of teas, Nespresso coffee machine, smart TV and luxurious bathroom amenities. The elegant Cooke’s Restaurant & Bar offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, a small plates menu during the afternoon and a great range of wines and cocktails for evening drinks. High Tea is also served here daily, with a wonderful selection of sandwiches, warm scones and sweet treats – you’ll have to book 24 hours in advance though. Thanks to the hotel’s central location, you can stroll to plenty of local restaurants and bars if you fancy a change of scenery. Albert Park, Auckland Art Gallery and New Zealand Maritime Museum are also just a 10-minute walk away.
