If you’re keen to explore New Zealand’s incredible landscapes but don’t want to drive, then we recommend one of the country’s breathtaking rail journeys. Take in spectacular views over rolling plains, karst limestone hills and snow-topped volcanic peaks, all from the comfort of a train – you’ll even have outdoor viewing carriages to let you maximise those Instagram-worthy panoramic shots.
There are three main routes; Northern Explorer is the biggie, a 400-mile journey from New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland down to the capital, Wellington on the southern tip of North Island. The other two are on South Island – The TranzAlpine whisks you from Christchurch to Greymouth, where you can also pick up and drop off hire cars, and the Coastal Pacific from Christchurch to Picton is flanked by mountains to the west and sea to the east. All three routes can be done in reverse and are operated by the same company which runs the Interislander ferry between Wellington and Picton.
Pop in store and we’ll help you create your perfect New Zealand rail adventure.
