Windhoek has a whole host of historic landmarks, including the Alte Feste, or Old Fortress, which was built in 1890 and now houses the National Museum. You can also find the Christ Church, a Lutheran church from 1910 displaying some beautiful Gothic and Art Nouveau architectural elements, near the busy Parliament Gardens and Titenpalast. Windhoek is also home to three castles, the Heinitzburg, the Sanderburg and the Schwerinsburg as well as the picturesque St. Mary’s Cathedral. In the city you can also find the National Library of Namibia and the Reiterdenkmal, also known as the Equestrian Monument.
Aside from historic buildings, Windhoek is also home to Zoo Park, a public park with beautiful landscaped gardens a ponds, play area for children, and a wonderful open-air theatre, the only one in Namibia. There are also an array of local markets which are well worth a wander, though for cheaper deals, Okahanja, just outside Windhoek is ideal. For something a little adventurous, a Cats Unlimited expedition is both informative and fun as it helps with the conservation of various big cats.
