Think you know all-inclusive Mexico?
Mexico’s coastal resorts are well known as the home of the ‘fly and flop’ all-inclusive break; however, they have also gained a reputation as a bit of a party destination for American teens and 20-somethings. We take a look at why people’s pre-conceived ideas of a Mexico all-inclusive holiday are often far from reality.
Just by looking at a small selection of our featured resorts you can see there’s a wide range of choice and no two resorts are the same. Whether it’s a family holiday, an adults-only escape or a wellness break that you’re seeking, you’ll definitely find what you’re looking for here. But what the resorts all have in common are the fantastic all-inclusive packages they offer. There are few places around the world that offer the same value for money Mexico does, and especially for such high standards of service, incredible locations and excellent inclusions.
Stretching along the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula you’ll find the country’s main Caribbean resorts of Cancun, the Riviera Maya and Tulum, each with their own identity and atmosphere. Cancun is undoubtedly the most famous of these, and the destination that’s most likely to conjure up those party-city expectations. So if you’re seeking a lively holiday with plenty of restaurants, shops, bars and clubs on your doorstep then the city’s Hotel Zone, which is located on a strip of beach between the Caribbean Sea and the Nichupté Lagoon, is for you.
Travel a few miles south and you’ll reach the wonderful Riviera Cancun, a quieter spot where the beautiful beaches are backed by a handful of resorts and low-lying jungle. It’s along this stretch of coast that one of our most luxurious featured properties is located – the beautifully-secluded Zoëtry Paraiso de la Bonita Riviera Maya. Voted the Caribbean’s top all-inclusive resort in the 2016 Travellers’ Choice Awards, Zoëtry Paraiso de la Bonita Riviera Maya has just 90 suites, making it one of the region’s most intimate choices and a world away from those mega resorts.
The focus here is firmly on guests’ wellbeing: there’s an incredible Thalasso centre and spa on site, and only organic and healthy (but oh so tasty) food is served in the restaurants. And best of all, the Endless Privileges® all-inclusive package fully supports the emphasis on well-being with inclusions such as one Thalasso seawater experience per guest per stay, a traditional Temazcal steam room ceremony and unlimited access to the outdoor therapeutic seawater pool, the saunas, steam rooms and Jacuzzis.
A time for romance
The name Riviera Maya conjures up images of soft white sand dotted with palms, and inviting turquoise waters – the must haves on any Mexico beach holiday and just a handful of the reasons that make the elegant Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun our most popular Mexico resort. Add to this the undeniably romantic atmosphere the hotel oozes – it’s a tranquil adults-only property – and you have the makings for your honeymoon, anniversary or ‘just because’ holiday.
Your days can easily be whiled away on what has been described as one of world’s best beaches by the Travel Channel, and luckily it’s not too much trouble to tear yourself away when it’s time for dinner. There are six excellent à la carte restaurants and a buffet venue on site serving gourmet dishes from around the world, all of which are included in the Unlimited-Luxury® package. And if that’s not enough, you can head out for the evening to one of the nearby sister resorts as part of the ‘Sip, Savour and See’ dining experience – that’s included too. All you need to do is make reservations and arrange your transfers which are payable locally.
A family favourite
Breathtaking Tulum, the southern-most of our featured resorts, has all the essentials for a Mexico family holiday… white-sand beaches, surrounding nature and some great sights and parks to explore nearby. And our ultimate family hotel of choice – possibly along Mexico’s entire Caribbean coast – is Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa.
Ordinarily parents might head to the spa alone, however at Dreams Tulum younger guests are catered for at the Dreams Spa by Pevonia and can enjoy their own treatments such as the chocolate and mint exfoliation; perfect for a family spa day. There are of course plenty of activities that are strictly kids or teens only such as the weekly camping adventure on the beach (serious envy from the adults here) and big-screen movies on the beach. While the resort might be a family favourite, there are also adults-only rooms and suites located in a separate Preferred Club section, as well as an adults-only restaurant. Together with the laid-back vibe you feel throughout the entire resort, this makes it a great choice for couples and honeymooners.
A further highlight of a stay at Dreams Tulum is that you’ll be in one of the best locations from which to explore the local area and its cultural and natural treasures. The famous Mayan ruins of Tulum that sit majestically overlooking the Caribbean Sea, are only a 20-minute drive away while the Xel-Ha Park with its caves, rivers, ancient ruins, jungle trails and cenotes is just 10 minutes north of the resort. You really don’t need to stay in resort for your entire stay… there’s plenty to see.
