I'll definitely be back!
I don't get away nearly enough and it was my stay at La Perla that's made me change that. Everything about this vacation was easy and I didn't have to worry about anything. Gorgeous facility, the most friendly staff and all the food was delicious. I've decided to make this destination a yearly experience, at least!
Good all-inclusive, away
Book dinners with specialty restaurant right after check-in and show up on-time. The buffet restaurants have a wide choice. Check-out the activities planned during the stay that is displayed at reception.
A solid 4
The property is a solid 4 star, meaning that if you're used to true 5 star properties and you evaluate on that scale, this is a 4. We stayed 5 nights on a package deal with flights from Newark over Thanksgiving for $3000. We checked in and were told that our Junior Suite had been upgraded to the Royal Service area, but did not come with the Royal Service services, only access to the Royal Service lounge. We didn't ever see that the additional price for Royal Service was worth it. We were in room 1080, which is on the first floor and has no view to speak of. It's within the Royal Service area, so having Royal Service lounge access is nice, but you can't checkout here nor can you use the pool or private Royal Service area with this upgrade. From the room, you can see workers passing by and golf carts, but not much more. That specific room has a strong smell of humidity, and when we got home, the smell persisted in our bags and clothes. We mentioned this a few times (and even asked Expedia if we could fly home a few days early) but maintenance either did nothing or couldn't fix the problem. We also asked for three days in a row for another room, but only a downgrade was available. In hindsight, we now wish we had moved. When asked at checkout how everything was, we mentioned this to Guadalupe, who said that "oh, it's probably just the humidity." We understand tropical humidity, and we aren't smell sensitive. In this room, it was more than that. Outside the room and in some public areas, paint can be seen peeling from the walls, though it's not common and the property is in good shape. The pool is well maintained and the grounds are immaculate. The food was good. Nothing was wrong with it. Solid but a little but unimaginative and unremarkable. Given the amount of fresh fish and produce available, we expected more variety and more compelling flavors, or some dish which would really "wow" us. Service was on par with the region, though we did have a strange experience with one of the waiters standing before us for about 45 seconds without saying anything (he was staring at a large group in reception) and he later apologized, saying that they were under staffed and that he was not feeling well. Seating in the restaurants always seemed to put us just within earshot of other tables despite lots of open space. It was just a little uncomfortable and by the end we were asking for certain tables to not be awkwardly sat next to other groups in half-empty restaurants. Obviously, when full, this wasn't a problem. The gym was nicer than what is presented in the photos. We didn't use the spa. Our transfer in with SuperShuttle/Execucar was a little odd. For the entire trip, Jorge Gonzalez our driver in vehicle 201 lamented his daily salary of $8 and told us that Asians don't understand Western culture and refuse to tip. He twice told us the story (which I assume is often told) that he unloaded 45 bags only to receive a $1 tip, despite having seen a huge pile of cash in the bag of one of the passengers. It was a little uncomfortable and we didn't get a moment to chat between ourselves because he kept talking about only this subject, at one point pretending to speak to his wife and telling her that it was going to be a long day and that he didn't expect to get any tips. It's a very odd strategy for getting tips. Regardless, it was an uneventful transfer. Use of the hotel taxis was great, with one female driver giving great service and some useful tips. The transfer out was also great with Execucar/SuperShuttle, but had we not pre-paid the transfer, we would have preferred to use the hotel taxi for the transfer back to the airport. Overall, it was a nice trip and the warm weather was a welcome break from the Northeast's late autumn. There's no view of the beach, with the property set about 100 meters back through a lovely mangrove. There was no seaweed. The bars were good - never too crowded. The staff was great. Breakfast was standard and solid. People were nice. Linens were standard. Our best meals were off-property at El Fogon and in Cozumel (non-cruise ship days) at El Palomito (great view) and Mariscos Camilo's (no view, but lovely food and people) We wouldn't return but that doesn't mean it wasn't what was offered. Next time, we'd rent a higher-end Airbnb with a private pool, stock it with drinks and light snacks, and eat out, which will likely be cheaper and more suited to our tastes.
Excellent all round! We had a great holiday here! Our room was superb, the service brilliant & the food excellent & plentiful The restaurants & bars were great with first calls service & premium brand drinks What's not to like ! we would definitely recommend to friends & family !
