Weekend Break on our 29th Wedding anniversary
On our 29th Anniversary , since we could not travel abroad, we decided to go on a Staycation in Malta and chose AX The Palace Hotel . The location is great as it is central and close to all amenities. We booked room 248 with balcony which was spacious and very clean. Food was superb both breakfast and dinner. The entire staff are all friendly and very helpful more so that we were very impressed. One word describes it all EXCELLENT
Excellent hotel, would recommend. However only a 4*
Review Me and my partner stayed at the Palace early September for 5 nights. Overall we had a really good stay at the palace. The location is in a good place with Scott’s supermarket just round the corner, and the harbour about 5 mins walk away with all the shops bars and restaurants you would need. The hotel itself has lots of features you would need, with restaurants, pools, bars and even a gym. The infinity pool was excellent and very clean with sun loungers always available. We only struggled with finding a good spot on the Tuesday however this was a bank holiday in Malta so I imagine the majority of people around the pool were locals. Speaking of the locals, we found that the locals on the island (not in the hotel, but in the Bay Area) could be pretty off putting. The pavements are small and we found that 95% of the time we would be barged out into the road to make way for them without a please or thank you. Food We used the breakfast buffet, the Asian restaurant, and the rooftop terrace restaurant. We found the breakfast buffet to have good variety, but being a Brit, we found the bacon and sausages to leave a lot to be desired. The layout was good in terms of abiding by social distancing regulations. The Asian restaurant was okay, quite pricey for what it was but the food was good. The rooftop terrace was an incredible setting but we found the food poor. They did have a deal on with a 3 course meal and unlimited beer and wine for 3 hours for €20 which is incredible value, however the pizza was one of the worst we have ever eaten in our lives. However the unlimited drinks definitely made the €20 worth it. The second time we dined we had pasta, which again, wasn’t great however we made up for it with plenty of wine and beer. Room We stayed in a superior room on the 5th floor with a room facing the bay. The view was okay. Amenities were excellent with a bath, safe and mini fridge. The air conditioning was okay. You do have to put up with church bells ringing from early hours however this is standard across the whole island and after the first few days you get used to it. We only had the cleaners come in a couple of times but their attention to detail was really impressive, even going as far to replacing the hotels toilet rolls on the holder with ones that we had bought and left on the side. (Side note, the toilet rolls really were poor, for a 5* hotel I expected better than 1 ply). Bedding was comfortable and the TV was large although channels limited but what can you expect We did find the amount of deals and offers on in the hotel extremely confusing and signage was sometimes out of date. It seemed that at every hour of every day there was some sort of deal or offer on either at the pool or one of the few restaurants in the hotel. We also found that some of the deals on offer were not intended for hotel guests but rather the general public, who are free to enter the hotel and use the facilities. This came as a slight surprise to us, especially in covid times, however it didn’t really affect our stay at all. There is no uber on the island but we found bolt to be a really good alternative with good prices to and from the airport and St George’s bay. There are also Bolt electric scooters dotted around the island that can be a cheap and extremely fun alternative. We used the scooters on multiple days to travel to St George’s bay which I should add is the only sandy beach in the area. We found the waiting staff to be hit or miss, with some being extremely attentive and professional and some of them could of done with putting on a smile on, albeit under their masks! Finally we would like to give a special recognition to Boban who was a waiter at the rooftop terrace restaurant. He went above and beyond with his service, explaining the menu, the food & wine with excellent detail. If anything he made the rest of the restaurant staff look extremely inferior with how professional he was. Definitely the 5* service you would expect and I would recommend you advise your other waiting staff that they could learn a lot from him. Overall we had a very good stay at the hotel and would recommend it to others. I do feel however that some of the worse reviews on here are from people coming to the Palace expecting 5* which it is not. If you come here expecting a 4* hotel you will be a lot more happier with what you receive.
A hotel not to be missed.
We had a very relaxing weekend break at the 5 star Palace Hotel in Sliema. The service was very good. From our arrival, we were welcomed by Mr. Charles Portelli who had done his utmost to accommodate our requests. The service during breakfast was very good with the waiter/chef assisted us in our dietary requirements. Our room on the seventh floor was comfortable, clean and spacious. Furthermore, we had a balcony where we could enjoy some relaxing time. A big thanks to the Palace staff for all their efforts to give an excellent service.
Loved it - Great Hotel - Would Recommend
Our stay at the AX Palace was overall excellent and here's why: Location The location is pretty central in Sliema and a few minutes walk to the harbour where you can find many restaurants and shops and also take the ferry to Valetta. Hotel The hotel is great and one thing I would like to mention above everything is that the entire staff from manager to restaurant staff to cleaning staff are all exceptionally helpful and friendly, more so than I have ever encountered anywhere else. They will do anything in their power to make your stay wonderful. We had a problem with our air conditioning and were offered an upgrade. I politely emailed my concerns and received a prompt reply from one of the managers Charles. I would like to thank the staff for making our stay absolutely wonderful, Simba, Charles, Dorianne, Irene and many others. Food The food was great although we ate in the restaurants only a couple of times as we chose to explore Malta and eat out. The buffet breakfast was organised well with Covid-19 mitigation in place such as being served at the buffet rather than being able to touch any food which is very reassuring. Face masks worn everywhere and temperature taken every time we arrived at the hotel. Room Where to start! Our room was amazing. The 'Flavours Suite' was so much fun with a nod to the 1950s in style and décor. It was spacious, huge private balcony with two sunbeds, two large separate doors leading out onto the balcony and a walk-in wardrobe with safe. Superking sized bed with TV, bar area with two fridges, kitchen diner table and his and hers bathroom suite. It was spacious, comfortable, luxurious, immaculately clean and fun. Pool There's an infinity pool high up on the eighth floor with panoramic views which really is superb. There was only one cause for concern whilst we were there. On Monday there's a deal where local people can come along and enjoy a package deal for use of the pool, food and drinks which is great for them but not for us. It was very busy if not chaotic but not a problem for the rest of our time there. There's also an adults only pool but that was sometimes booked for private functions so we didn't use it. There was always plenty of room at the main pool - it was heavenly with views all around and a constant pleasant breeze. There's even an indoor pool which we chose to use in the late afternoon where you can find another balcony area, steam room and sauna (neither open due to current situation but not a problem). The pool area was spacious, clean and relaxing with large windows on two sides. Getting Around The ferry is the easiest way to get to Valetta but you're faced with a pretty steep climb on the other side in order to get to the city. We found getting a taxi was very cheap (less than £10) to get to Valetta and we did that most evenings and ran down the hill in time to catch the last boat home at half eleven. Incredibly enjoyable to take the short trip by boat under the stars. We also took the bus from Sliema to St Julian's which was also easy and we spent a pleasant afternoon wandering around the marina. There are a couple of high end shops there and we enjoyed browsing jewellery and other luxury items. St Julian's itself is worth a visit and is a livelier location but Valetta was our favourite place.
4 nights stay
We stayed here whilst enjoying a family wedding on the island. All the staff were outstanding, from the reception to cleaning, breakfast & restaurant waiting staff. Charles on reception desk was so helpful, friendly & knowledgable. We stayed in a family room on the 1st floor. We booked directly with the hotel & got a fabulously good deal inc. Breakfast. The room was spacious & 6 of us could have slept in the bed comfortably. We dined in the restaurant on the 9th floor with amazing night views & the food was delicious. Breakfast was a little different due to social distancing. We were asked as soon as we sat down what drink we wanted & then the normal self service stations were manned. We just said what we wanted & there was someone there to serve us. A good selection & seemed good quality. Will stay again
