Mallorca Holidays

Mallorca holidays are bleached sands, blonde stone architecture and a glamorous Gothic capital.

Imagine yourself perched clifftop on the edge of the Mediterranean where Grace Kelly and Prince Rainer honeymooned, dipping into an infinity pool that seemingly floats down to the sea. There’s the scent of salty air and bougainvillea, the sight of Deià architecture and turquoise bays and the magic of 17th-Century villas and Balearic spa resorts bathed in an azure panorama.

We love the secluded side of Mallorca holidays – those in the know flock to the enchanting village of Deià for al fresco restaurants surrounded by the fiery orange Tramuntana mountains or take the vintage train to Sóller for the seductive charm of an old Mediterranean village hidden inside a valley of orange and lemon groves. One moment you’ll be in the Gothic capital as Passeig del Born’s luxury shops lure you in before haute tapas washed down with martinis on a rooftop bar, the next on a bleached wood jetty leaning out to sapphire waters waiting for the sun to drop so you can dine on wild sea bass and Spanish bellota ham inside a jasmine-filled 16th-Century olive press.

Hot Air Balloon Flight Over Mallorca

Enjoy the magical experience of a hot-air balloon ride over Mallorca at either sunrise or sunset, when the air is cooler and the wind gentler and more predictable. After watching the preparations, you’ll get into the basket and, with a roar of the burners, will slowly climb into the sky for your one-hour adventure. It’s a memorable way to see the island that combines a feeling of peace and freedom with birds-eye views of the landscape in all directions; on a clear day, you may be able to see as far as Cabrera and Menorca. To add to the sense of occasion, you’ll be drifting along with a glass of cava in hand, so you can sip it while enjoying the changing colours of the sky.

Cabrera consists of an archipelago of 19 small islands, so there’s plenty of rugged coastline – cliffs, grottoes and caves – to enjoy. Throughout the day, you’ll be able to swim in sheltered coves with tiny beaches, snorkel over seagrass meadows teeming with marine life, and try your hand at sailing under the supervision of the experienced skipper. Take some time to visit the main island, where the wild scrubland of juniper and mastic bushes dotted with Aleppo pines is a magnet for birdlife of all kinds. There’s a centuries-old hilltop castle to visit, the views from which are well worth the effort of getting there, and quiet stretches of sand on which to recover afterwards. Palma Mallorca's capital, Palma, is a must-visit with its stunning Gothic cathedral, Le Seu, dominating the skyline and an old Arab quarter showcasing some of the city’s beautiful architecture. There’s also a sophisticated Mediterranean café culture, designer, antique and high street shops – head to Avinguda Jaume III and the Passeig del Born for department stores and upmarket shops – as well as some of Mallorca’s finest restaurants.

Exploring Mallorca Head to Pollentia for the Roman ruins of what was once the capital, ride the vintage train from Palma to Sóller to see one of the most charming traditional towns in Spain and visit Cap de Formentor for Instagram-worthy coastal. If you fancy going underground, the Caves of Drach are home to one of the largest underground lakes in the world and an atmospheric boat tour takes you through the turquoise Baths of Diana. For something more laid back, visit the hillside coastal village of Deià, one of the prettiest on the island.

Getting around If you want to hire a car for convenience and freedom, road conditions on the island are fantastic, but you can expect hairpin bends and narrow lanes along some of the coastal paths leading up to the cliffs and mountains. Car hire is the best way to reach a variety of different beaches and the mountains. Bus and bicycle are also excellent ways of exploring, with plenty of bikes for hire and bus services running a timetable (schedules dependent on route and day of the week) to most resort towns, although journeys can be long.
