Faaru - fantastic - creating sublime memories
Given all the changes in our world in the last month, the memories of a very special week at Faarufushi are even more precious. We arrived on Feb 19th, after a rather difficult transit through a very crowded Male airport, to a little piece of paradise. We were met at the sea plane jetty by Jean Marc, the GM who was charming and we walked along to the stunning reception area to complete the paperwork (most of this was done in advance by their staff at the airport) before jumping in a buggy to see our beautiful over water villa with its own pool and “no news, no shoes” (our choice – there was plenty to access if you wanted it) for a week of bliss. All the good things you have read on here are totally accurate, so I will try not to repeat all of them. Highlights for me: Firstly, the staff – who have this wonderful sense of calm and peace that helps you acclimatise to a state of relaxation within such a short time. They made every drink, meal, encounter, a sublimely tranquil experience, thank you to Purni, Ling, Pitta (who entertained us every breakfast time and over a long lunch on a rainy day), Stephy, and to Niushaan, Wifaq and all the others who’s names we just don’t have but each of you is special. Second highlight (a very close second) is the food. We ate everywhere and tried everything. We asked for things that weren’t on the menu and asked to try local specialities and nothing was too much trouble. We loved everything, thank you to Chef Bir and Chef Adil for everything, especially the Maldivian thali and the fresh pasta. To Ashok and Hisherm, you are a credit to your professional and you will I’m sure be very successful in your chosen careers. The reception team and the IT manager (can you believe they have an IT manager!!) were so helpful when we needed a little support on the first day to post some Instagram photos. Third highlight is the spa, I had prebooked two treatments, a scrub and a massage, both were exceptional. I would have loved to have more but I couldn’t drag myself away from the beautiful deck with our own pool and uninterrupted views of the Indian ocean. Practical information: We booked the all inclusive package, we used the facility of the mini bar in the day which was very convenient and refilled every day (the French blanc de blanc sparkling wine was included and excellent) and ate in all the restaurants, there were no restrictions or queuing for booking in the a la carte, basically what ever you wanted, when ever you wanted it, they made it happen, a couple of dishes had supplements but there was plenty choice aside from these. My husband didn’t always want to go for lunch so I went to the beach restaurant on my own a couple of times and the staff there prepared a little snack to take back to him which was so lovely. The wine list has a decent page of red, white and rose that were included in the AI package and same with the cocktails and beers, there was plenty choice, even with cocktails after dinner every evening, I don’t think we got through the list. In the villa there were flotation jackets which were perfect for an amateur snorkeler like me. The bathroom products were Locitane, coffee was nespresso and there was a variety of speciality teas. No slippers but flip flops, a beach bag, waffle dressing gowns and very white fluffy towels. Decent hairdryer, though the cable was a bit short, it might unwind more with use! We asked in advance for a villa which got the sun most of the day so we were in one of the sunset villas, on the left as you want down the pier. Villas on the right got the sunrise and then were shadier. The island, like so many places, is experiencing some of the effects of climate change, and some work was ongoing to replenish part of a disappearing beach. We know this is inevitable and they are clearly working to try and overcome this so there is part (a very small part) of the beach with sandbags protection, well, just look the other way…They are doing a great job with bottling their own water which they leave in the room and replenish morning and evening. The room boys did a good job servicing the rooms each day, and apart from one day, this was done before we got back from breakfast, well done. The island is very new, less than a year old I believe so to create a team like this I think is credit to the general manger and his deputy Marge. I got a sense from the staff that he is very well respected, he was highly visible and I think leads by example, he also seemed to exude this calmness which was so prevalent throughout the island. On our final night, after dinner, the lights went down and the music started…I had told the reservations department before we arrived that the trip was a gift to my husband for his birthday. The birthday is not till April but Feb was when we could travel (and aren’t we glad now!!!). The restaurant team joined with the entertainer to sing happy birthday and brought cake which was such a surprise. So much so that I don’t have any pictures! And when we got back to our room, there was the most amazing floral display of “happy birthday” on the bed. Thank you everyone at Faarufushi for giving us an amazing week and wonderful memories. Given the global crisis which is currently sweeping through our world, we will be revisiting every photograph and every memory from inside our home in the UK on John’s birthday and will raise a toast to you all and your good health. Many thanks from Catherine and John Walker.
Best honeymoon we could dream of
Amazing piece of paradise : quiet and peaceful, luxury in simplicity, barefoot on day long, food was wonderful from breakfast to dinner whatever the restaurant, somptuous marine ecosystem a few meters from the beach.... Absolutely nothing to reproach. Long life to Faarufushi ! A special thank you to Ashok, for his wonderful surprise for our last dinner, to Hemraj for his amazing cocktail (Fruity Coco forever!!) and to our Nepalese coconut man :)
A fabulous holiday destination
Just back from a great two week stay on Faarufushi. The island is beautiful, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble for them. Especially on the occasion of our wedding anniversary, when they created a very special meal for us on the beach, surrounded by lights. The food and drink are excellent in all three restaurants. Every chef takes great pride in their work. Wonderful baked goods, desserts that taste as good as they look, and that’s saying something. In fact, all the food is delicious and there is a great deal of choice. The cocktails are also worth mentioning. All imaginative and gorgeous. And there are two locations from which to enjoy the sunset and the cocktails. Accommodation is spacious and luxurious. There are water sports and a spa, which we didn’t sample. But we did snorkel quite a bit and the reef edge is full of fish. The housekeeping and laundry service do a lovely job. The gardeners keep the beach and gardens beautifully. We certainly recommend Faarufushi for a special holiday.
Beautiful Resort, though lacking in finesse on entry/exit
I should start off by saying we had an amazing time here. It's a beautiful resort, the over water ocean villas are incredible, the design is gorgeous, and the island itself leaves you breathless. The food is very good, especially breakfast, though it is resort food, so not noteworthy in its own right (including eclipse). We did enjoy several nights of cocktails at Boli, which had amazing views of the sunset and very good service. I would also really recommend going snorkeling at turtle point - there's an immense array of sea life to be seen! Where the hotel slightly let us down was on the entry and exit. Our wait time for the sea plane was a bit long (3 hours all told), and this was mostly due to a fault with the sea plane. The lounge in which we had to wait was slightly lacklustre, and we'd noticed that the other hotel lounges at least had a view of the dock. A minor point all the same, but if they can arrange for guests to wait in an outdoor lounge it would be a massive improvement. Our flight out of Male was in the morning. As such, the hotel arranged for a morning sea plane transfer. The evening before we left the resort, we were left with a note indicating our sea plane arrival time, and various arrangements around that, including the time when a representative would come help us with our bags. As our departure was early, the hotel also said that a packed breakfast would be provided (we had a meal plan including breakfast). The representative came slightly late, and no breakfast was provided, nor apology offered when I had inquired about it. This didn't seem like ill-will, it only indicated carelessness and confusion of the staff. A more slick operation would have at least arranged some sort of breakfast or voucher for us in Male airport, where we had plenty of time before our flight. It just left one with a sour last impression. On the whole, we would say the hotel is beautiful and definitely worth a trip, but the service is still lacking in finesse and needs improvement.
The Staff Are Amazing
We are regular travelers to the Maldives, which in itself is surprising to us, we always said there were so many great places in the world we would try to not repeat. We use the excuse that we haven’t repeated a particular resort YET. This could change after our spell at Faarufushi. It has all the usual perfect moments with delicious food, magic sunsets, wonderful sea life and immaculate villas. We opted for the over water bungalow and were more than happy with the pool and room. The mini bar was adequate though we have been to resorts where spirits are included in the mini bar. What made this resort special for us were the staff. I could list a long staff rota of impressive people but will limit it to 3 main players. We send our special thanks to Raj, Charline and Achok. They bent over backwards for us. I was foolish enough to forget a hat and Charline went out of her way fto find one to my liking as the shop only had cowboy style which I am not partial to. Raj and Ashok entertained us with great conversation most evening and always made the meal times extra special. This resort has been put on the very short list of possible return visits. I would suggest that the resort shop has a little more stock, there was the hat shortage and then we had an after-sun shortage, but other than that it was 10 nights and days in heaven
