Less is more on this small coral island, which combines a chic modern design with a wonderfully unspoilt natural setting.
Opening in February 2019, Faarufushi is one of the newest additions to the Maldives' five-star resort portfolio. Bringing barefoot luxury to the remote northern Raa Atoll, there's a real focus on simple indulgences here. The pristine white sand against the intoxicatingly blue lagoon is breathtaking, while the chic, minimalist design is a delicate addition to the island's vegetation. Designed to show off the island's natural beauty, you'll struggle to find a part of the resort that doesn't overlook the spectacular turquoise waters. There's a fantastic house reef here, and the resort offers snorkelling tours just metres from the beach, while beyond the reef an experienced in-house PADI team are on hand to show you some of the best dive sites nearby. And if you want to do as little as possible, then the treehouse-style treatment rooms and relaxation pavilions in the spa are an indulgent treat that promise you an afternoon of undisturbed relaxation.
Whether it's a beachside retreat offering total escapism, or a sleek overwater villa that enjoys front-row access to the dazzling lagoon, all of the rooms here combine understated luxury with a contemporary design. Beach Bungalows have stylish open-air bathrooms, while the Beach Retreats have a private plunge pool. Ocean Retreats with Pool are all about the view, with floor-to-ceiling windows and an overwater deck with direct access to the water. At the jetty's end, the Ocean Suites with Pool are more spacious, with a larger living area and overwater infinity pool.
There are three excellent restaurants on the island, all focusing on high quality dishes and wonderful views of the ocean. Iru is the resort's main all-day dining restaurant, while Athiri is the casual beachside eatery where you can find tasty treats ranging from teppanyaki and robatayaki to tapas, bagels and even wood-fired pizza. And then there's Eclipse, the signature crescent-shaped overwater restaurant, where you can enjoy modern European and Asian-fusion cuisine at the same time as drinking in uninterrupted lagoon views. Follow this with a post-dinner drink at the stylish Boli bar, an overwater lounge that offers you sunset views the whole year round.
