Truly Amazing place
We stayed at Shangri la Rasa Ria resort in July 2019, after a month travelling around south-east Asia this was to be our last stop before going home. Rasa Ria resort has two wings Garden and Ocean. We stayed at Ocean Wing which is pure luxury. The white sandy beach two swimming pools only for the guests of Ocean wing, jacuzzi are some of the beautiful surroundings of this truly magical place. the rooms are massive, the balcony has its own spa. All the rooms have a view of the Ocean and tranquil swimming pool area. Staff is so very helpful, they tend to your every need, constant fresh towels and cleanness of the room. The spa that is located on the golf course is phenomenal. the choice of restaurants and food and excellent breakfast buffet and pool restaurant was amazing. We'll definitely come back again. you will see the most amazing sunsets and all the tours are carefully managed so you can enjoy thai magnificent island.
The staff were very welcoming and helpful from the minute we met at the airport. Checking in was efficient and friendly. We had a garden view room for one night before upgrading as an ocean view room became available. The garden room was good but the ocean room was great. Day bed and double bath on the balcony were great. The room and bathroom were big, spacious and clean. Our maid did a great job too. Comfy bed and the free mini bar was a nice touch. The food was incredible. Every restaurant was great. Fast service, good portions and choice. Liked the Sampan bar too with its sunset show. Nice cocktails. Thank you Villa for helping create a new one with me! We had fun. Breakfast was busy but no waiting. We tried both restaurants during our stay. both had high standards, although you may have a bit if a wait for your coffee. We just got our own. Lovely selection of food at breakfast. Chefs very friendly to make eggs or Asian soup. Thank you to Suriyana for looking after us at breakfast. The ocean view pool and jacuzzi area was spacious and very clean. Good bar service.saw the odd monitor lizard wandering past which was exciting. (They don't bother you) we also used the sunbeds on the grass area, lovely and quiet with views of the beautiful beach. It's a clean beach as the hotel looks after it, but some plastic had been washed up as we walked it. Picked it up as its all of our responcibility. The hotel are trying to reduce plastic pollution. Had a beach massage too. oh wow! Masseuse was spot on! Recommend that as so lovely to hear the waves whilst being massaged. Had a guided safari tour in the wonderful nature reserve. Saw wildlife, snake, tarantulas, monkeys, frogs and monitor lizards. Great for families, as was the garden view pool. Restaurant, ice cream shop and other stands right next to it. Lovely atmosphere at that pool. We also played golf and did a golf bird watching session. Saw two types of king Fisher, hawks, waders and lots if song birds. The golf course was excellent and quiet. Very helpful staff, rented clubs etc. All good. The hotel is great but the staff made the holiday for us. Everyone was genuine and appeared to enjoy working at the hotel. We saw staff chatting, laughing, smiling and generally enjoying what the were doing (when they didn't think we were watching!) Thank you for a lovely holiday!
Have stayed here a number of times but more lately find myself going self catering and coming to the Rasa Ria for dining and activity options. The restaurants here are some of the best in Kota Kinabalu, and the grounds, including the pools and beach are always pristine and immaculately kept. Rooms (of which there are many, and a wide variation) are always a high standard. Where-as the service might not be quite what you'd expect from other international Shangri-la resorts, by Malaysian standards it's very good. All in all a very nice hotel, although I do feel given other options that enjoy the same natural beauty as the Rasa Ria, if not the same levels of facilities or service it certainly isn't cheap and could perhaps be better value for money. Not typically something at the top of a list for a Shangri-La resort to be too concerned with though really, and can't really fault many other other aspects.
Relaxing stay away from the hustle and bustle
Excellent service by truly committed staff under management who really take ownership - we were impressed by the ongoing updates and options offered when our designated room was not yet ready upon check-in. The hotel has essentially two sections with separate pools and breakfast facilities - the Garden and Ocean Wing. We were in the new Ocean Wing and had an amazing room with ample space. Breakfast is very good. The coffee lounge (?) is marketed as 'international' but is actually one of their best restaurants if you like fresh seafood. Avoid the Naan restaurant - the food was bland and very far indeed from authentic Indian taste. The beach is very wide but also unusually deep - expect to walk a full 200-300m if you want to go for a swim. The hotel is embedded in nature which adds to the calm and relaxing atmosphere. Very good gym, mountain bikes can be rented for free for one hour, beach volleyball at 5pm was fun. Daily free shuttle busses are offered to the city - book ahead for the 12:30 outbound and 15:15 return to have a lunch at Wisma and buy some fruits or have a massage. We were there during mid August which appears to be peak season with all rooms booked. Several activities and restaurants were fully booked, so check and reserve early when you arrive. Altogether a very relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable stay. A shame that only the garden can be explored by guests, and all other trails require booking of guided tours by rangers (venomous snakes abound).
My wife and I have a real love for this hotel, we first stayed here some 10 years ago, and visit the hotel for dinner every time we visit Sabah, which is around every 2 years. This year like any other visit, we made sure we went to the cultural night market dinner, only to find that this year, we had no dancers, the food was not as good, or the selection has been played down over the years. It is such a shame to see this hotel loose its Orangutans and now it’s cultural night over the years, I just hope it does get its act together going forward. Still has my love, but not how I remembered it at its best.
