Beautiful property with good game drives
We were the only guests at Elsa's Kopje for our 4 nights there. Felt a bit strange, but they took excellent care of us. It is very professionally run and the staff all seem to try to anticipate your every want. The main lodge and the dining area are open-air and very attractive. There's a swimming pool near the dining area. We loved our room looking out onto the plains and the rock hyrax who spent a lot of time on the deck just outside our room but never tried to come inside. Felt like he was a watchdog. There were hyrax all over - fun to see them. Our guide, Bashir, was excellent and we saw a great variety of animals. The area was dry, but there are multiple rivers so animals have places to drink, which are good spots to see animals, including elephants and 2 hippos. It was quite warm although cool on our 6am game drives. They provide blankets to keep you warm in the vehicle. Since Elsa's is the only lodge in Meru National Park and we were the only guests, we saw almost no other vehicles, which was delightful. The food was great, especially the lunches. Before COVID they had buffet lunches, but now they offer you a personal buffet at your table with 6 or 7 dishes plus dessert, very creative and interesting food. You order dinner in advance with several options. They surprised us with a full breakfast in the bush one morning, with eggs cooked to order. Another surprise was a fancy sundowner in the bush one afternoon in addition to the regular sundowners the other days. I had a wonderful massage one morning at a reasonable price. There are quite a few steps between the cottages or the reception area and the dining area, so it is not suitable for people with limited mobility. Our only complaint about our room is very limited drawer space for your clothes. Meru is not a well-known area but we highly recommend it.
Meru NP is frequently overlooked as a safari destination compared to the Maasai Mara or Amboseli. This is one reason it is so special - you won't have to jockey for position to get a photo of the lions. Another reason is Elsa's Kopje - a fantastic safari camp in an amazing location overlooking the veld. We were fortunate enough to have Bashir as our guide/driver and he's the real deal - sees everything, knows everything, and has a great sense of humor to boot (plus he makes a mean G&T). Grace and Taro, the managers, have the perfect touch - extremely hospitable and accommodating but not fawning. Definitely do the sunrise hike to the promontory above camp. Only request for Elewana: it would be great if Elsa's had its own Instragram feed. Thanks for a wonderful holiday.
Elsa’s Kopje - Meru National Park
A unique bush camp perched and carved on top of rocks in Meru National Park, amazing architecture, stunning views, wonderful service…..Nirvana! Truly an unforgettable and unique experience with an equally fascinating story behind it! Elsa’s Kopje should be on everyone’s bucket list!!
We had an excellent time at Elsa's with the fantastic rooms and views! All the rooms are unique and incorporate nature into the rooms, which was very cool. The family room was definitely amazing with a giant viewing deck and chill out area - if you're a large group it's worth it! What we really liked was how well our kids were looked after and entertained by Grace, Taro and the team so that we could relax. Thanks for the great experience!
