Wander around the Nairobi home of Karen Blixen, the author of Out of Africa, who wrote under her pen name Isak Dinesen. Out of Africa tells the tale of Karen’s life on a coffee plantation in Kenya and her doomed love affair with Denys Finch Hatton. Take a short drive to the Giraffe Centre just outside Nairobi to feed the Rothschild's giraffes, and later visit the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Nairobi Nursery. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Nairobi Nursery (open to the public 11am-midday) provides habitat for elephant and rhino calves whose mothers have fallen victim to poachers. Once the animals are strong enough, they are released into Tsavo National Park. So far, the trust has hand-raised over 150 infant elephants. Spend some time with the inquisitive elephants as they are fed by staff, who are on hand to answer any questions and talk about their experiences with these rescued baby elephants.
If you want to get more involved, it’s possible to foster an elephant through the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust – a UK registered charity based in Surrey – which also gives you exclusive afternoon viewing times at the orphanage (at 5pm, by appointment). The donation fee to foster an elephant helps cover the long-term commitment of feeding and caring for the little elephants until they are confident enough to join the wild herds. If you'd like to foster an elephant, please ask one of our Personal Travel Experts for more details.
