Magical camp in magical place - just book
Just returned from amazing 3 day trip. Fly Governors Air from Nairobi, Wilson as totally efficient and handy for the camp. Camp beautiful and full of wildlife very close. Elephants waiting at our lovely tent as we arrived. Then the sounds of Hippo as we slept. Special thank you for our safari guide - Joseph for being so enthusiastic, knowledgeable and supportive. He even stopped on route to collect garbage in the park which shows his love and pride of his job (management please give feedback). We saw the Great Migration, Cheetahs, Leopard and loads of lions. Anyone looking to book don’t hesitate as I can’t see how this can be beaten.
I bring guests here---my Favorite Place in Mara
Little Governors with Family –just now reviewing--from late January. Due to extended rainy season---there were challenges but staff overcame. We did Flying Package—only way to go. Flight was about 1 hour—did have one other stop. I was taking my grandson and his wife---he has been here before --but her first time. We arrived in Airstrip side-- but due to rains roads were really bad. We did make it to river and were able to cross the flat-bottom boat that is pulled by a rope. Note stairs are steep (40+ I think) and not for someone who can’t do stairs or really bad knees. Once you arrive you are taking to river to cross or for short game drive. We opted to go to camp—Mid morning. Tents are like 17-- set around a marsh area—resident hippos. There is the marsh in front of you –then the plains beyond with all kind of animals. (Bring binoculars). One can sit on porch of your tent and see lots of animals. There is the usual welcome with juice and info and signing disclaimers, etc. Once done you are taking to your tent for relaxing then lunch under trees. This is not a camp with swimming pool and lots of tourists—this is more intimate. Note: there is No Electric fence around camp—animals can come into camp and do. There are armed guards at night that accompany you to your tents—hippos do come out at night to graze by tents. There is a family of resident warthogs –but friendly. Next morning we did morning game drive-- on the camp side of river due to river flooding and not able to cross back over. However, we saw great animals--we kept explaining to my granddaughter in-law—this is not always the way it works. Game drives are in 4-wheel Drive Land Cruisers---needed this trip due to rain and mud. Even though we had so much rain---our driver did an excellent job. We saw all the big5—even leopard with kill in tree--not always easy. There were lots of Lions and Elephants (my favorite) along with all gazelle, Impala, cheetah, etc.--not that many zebra and wildebeests due to migration had not occurred. We did see two Rhino which is not a given in this part of Kenya. Nice touches –is that they provide filtered water faucet in tent and excellent turn down service with hot water bottle for cool nights. Food is buffet for breakfast—cook to order eggs or omelets and buffet for lunch then 3 course meal at night with choices for those that are not meat eaters. After evening game drives—at bar-- they cook very nice samosas for snacks—and have full bar open. Be careful you don’t get full on snacks. They do have free Wi-Fi—and cell towers are there. Staff members are excellent and will cater to your every need. Camp Manager –Nicholas does wonderful job--My Favorite place.
Little Governors Camp was perfect for honeymoon. We got the end tent and managed to see giraffes, zebra and elephants in camp as well as seeing buffalo, hippos and lots of birds around the watering hole! We had 3 safari drives per day and our driver Kerore was AMAZING at spotting wildlife - we ticked off all the Big 5 as well as many more animals and a couple of cheetah hunts - it was beyond what we’d expected. The facilities at camp are amazing, we felt comfortable and well looked after at all time’s. It was definitely glamping rather than camping! The food was always of a good standard, we especially loved the BBQ! The hot air balloon ride was so special - the views of the Mara river were incredible, topped only by the boat ride to camp :) I’ll never forget my nerves on the little plane ride there, quickly followed by hopping straight into a jeep on a safari drive just minutes from landing (keep your sun cream handy!) - amazing, I couldn’t recommend the place more. Worth every penny and I so hope to be back!
Beyond all our expectations.
We stayed at Little Governors early February after staying in 4 other locations on our trip. Although all other accommodations had been excellent, we had saved the best until last. The location was wonderful ( we were fortunate enough to have the far tent 17 - though all were wonderful) looking out across the marsh and seeing hippos and giant crocs from our tent was something we will never forget. The noise of the hippos, combined with the frog chorus at night has to be heard to be believed. The food was consistently wonderful and catered well to all tastes. Everyone was friendly and cheerful, especially genial George who ran the place with laid back efficiency - nothing was too much trouble. Many others deserve a mention including Duncan our waiter, Oliver our guide and Henry who brought our tea each morning with a smile. Try to go for a birding walk in the grounds with David if you visit - amazing. All in all, even better than we had expected. Highly recommended.
I was so excited to stay at Little Governor's Camp for my family visit to the Maasai Mara, but was bitterly disappointed that it had to be canceled because of the spread of COVID-19, Kenya borders closed, and USA restrictions on travel. I emailed LGC expecting a smooth refund transaction due to this extenuating circumstance. Instead, George from LGC responded immediately detailing that they will not issue a refund but will push the dates back and when can they expect us to come visit (before June 2021). I replied saying that I cannot arrange for a holiday for the foreseeable future because (1) no one can see when this situation will be over and borders opened and (2) that my family needs the USD 2,000 to get us through not being able to go to work during the pandemic shut down. As of now, have received no response. I am very disappointed that LCG would be so unresponsive given the private and small scale of this boutique camp, and even more so that Little Governor's Camp would prioritize profiting off their guests, endangering guests and staff.
