Little Governors Camp was perfect for honeymoon. We got the end tent and managed to see giraffes, zebra and elephants in camp as well as seeing buffalo, hippos and lots of birds around the watering hole! We had 3 safari drives per day and our driver Kerore was AMAZING at spotting wildlife - we ticked off all the Big 5 as well as many more animals and a couple of cheetah hunts - it was beyond what we’d expected. The facilities at camp are amazing, we felt comfortable and well looked after at all time’s. It was definitely glamping rather than camping! The food was always of a good standard, we especially loved the BBQ! The hot air balloon ride was so special - the views of the Mara river were incredible, topped only by the boat ride to camp :) I’ll never forget my nerves on the little plane ride there, quickly followed by hopping straight into a jeep on a safari drive just minutes from landing (keep your sun cream handy!) - amazing, I couldn’t recommend the place more. Worth every penny and I so hope to be back!
Beyond all our expectations.
We stayed at Little Governors early February after staying in 4 other locations on our trip. Although all other accommodations had been excellent, we had saved the best until last. The location was wonderful ( we were fortunate enough to have the far tent 17 - though all were wonderful) looking out across the marsh and seeing hippos and giant crocs from our tent was something we will never forget. The noise of the hippos, combined with the frog chorus at night has to be heard to be believed. The food was consistently wonderful and catered well to all tastes. Everyone was friendly and cheerful, especially genial George who ran the place with laid back efficiency - nothing was too much trouble. Many others deserve a mention including Duncan our waiter, Oliver our guide and Henry who brought our tea each morning with a smile. Try to go for a birding walk in the grounds with David if you visit - amazing. All in all, even better than we had expected. Highly recommended.
I was so excited to stay at Little Governor's Camp for my family visit to the Maasai Mara, but was bitterly disappointed that it had to be canceled because of the spread of COVID-19, Kenya borders closed, and USA restrictions on travel. I emailed LGC expecting a smooth refund transaction due to this extenuating circumstance. Instead, George from LGC responded immediately detailing that they will not issue a refund but will push the dates back and when can they expect us to come visit (before June 2021). I replied saying that I cannot arrange for a holiday for the foreseeable future because (1) no one can see when this situation will be over and borders opened and (2) that my family needs the USD 2,000 to get us through not being able to go to work during the pandemic shut down. As of now, have received no response. I am very disappointed that LCG would be so unresponsive given the private and small scale of this boutique camp, and even more so that Little Governor's Camp would prioritize profiting off their guests, endangering guests and staff.
Unforgetable and magical
We cannot say enough about The Little Governor’s Camp. Less than an hour’s flight from Nairobi, situated on a pretty marsh which is home to hippos, a nearby elephant herd and close to the Mara River on the Masai Mara Game Reserve, you cannot ask for a more unforgetable and magical safari experience. The tents are homely and extremely well equipped. Each has unobstructed views of the marsh, comfortable beds (a hot water bottle for the chilly nights), excellent Wi-Fi, and full bathrooms. Solar supplies hot water and electricity. Definitely "Glamping." Dining is out of this world and under the stars. Thanks to Chef Kenneth and Daniel and their team, the quality and variety of food for breakfast, lunch and dinner will satisfy all your gourmet tastes. Served on tables set on the edge of the marsh, you can eat and listen to the hippos grunting and watch the elephants who venture into the marsh to eat and cool off in the water. Not to mention the resident family of warthogs that wander the camp unperterbed by your presence In between meals, you are treated to 3 game drives a day, and hours of hunting the Big Five which we saw, and all the surprises the Masai Mara has to offer. All the vehicles are open on the sides, giving ample opportunity to get those incredible up close photos of the animals. All the drivers are very knowledgeable and patient, and do their utmost to ensure you have an opportunity to see everything the Mara has to offer. Ballooning from the camp is also offered and not to be missed. The camp is not fenced and Camp Guards will escort you to and from your tents at night and in the early morning and to the boat that takes you across the river to your safari vehicle. Animals frequently graze around the tents at night which adds to the excitement if you can stay awake long enough to spot them, as your days are very full, and sleep comes quickly. This was our second trip to the Little Governor's and it will not be our last. Our very many thanks to all the Camp Staff and Manager, George, who made our stay so comfortable and memorable. A special thanks to our driver, Jackson, who treated us to incredible game drives, much excitement and lots of laughs.
Fell in love with this place.
Went here for my wife’s 40th. Best holiday yet! Did a fly in safari which I would highly recommend as you get a private open jeep safari experience. From landing we where met by lovely people, immediately saw wildlife on way to the camp, you have to cross a river in a boat which was great fun and added to the unique experience. This place is beautiful, all tents face the swamp where hippo live, elephants and wildlife drink, we ate our meal here too and sat watching baboons, elephants, giraffe, birds and the resident warthogs! The tents beautiful, we where given a hot water bottle for bed at night and woken with a hot drink in the morning before safari. The food and drinks are excellent. The wildlife in the mara is wonderful, to look out and not see another human litter or a building in the distance is good for the soul. We saw the marsh pride, a leopard, many elephants, hyena, giraffe and so much more. Our guide Jackson was amazing, so knowledgeable and funny at times. We did the balloon safari, this I would highly recommend, it’s an unforgettable experience, the pilot Ray was really funny and we saw a lot of wildlife, even a rhino with a baby, the landing was bumpy but great fun, we then had champagne breakfast in the bush and they sang happy birthday to my wife, the food was great! On the evening of my wife’s birthday they surprised her with a traditional Masai dance and song to which she joined in , it was fun and moving at the same time. This place wouldn’t be what it was without the fantastic 5* staff; ALL are friendly, happy knowledgeable people who anyone stopping here must take time to get to know, we made sure our birthday cake went to them and not the guests as they truly deserve it. One particular member of staff who stood out for us was a night security ranger called James, we wish him well and won’t forget him, he took us star gazing one night, never seen a sky like it. Nothing to complain about here, fell in love with this place.
