Our check-in went fine. Loved the cold towels. However, things went downward from there. The place looks amazing in promotional photos, but is quite run down in reality. It's one thing to be rustic and quite another to be run down. The bed linens and towels were rough... and I usually don't even notice those things, that's how bad they were. The screens were stained and we had a hard time with the zippers, which appeared old. The room itself seemed like its best days were behind it. Everything in the room was covered in fine dust. This might be charming for others, but I have an allergy to dust and wasn't aware that I would have to deal with this. It was disappointing. Spa services were not available. The reasoning was that they were trying to be safe and that the therapist would be double vaccinated soon and then they would open up the spa. Fair point, except that other properties that we stayed at already had their staff fully vaxxed and we weren't made aware of the absence of spa services in advance. Again, this might not be a big deal for others, but one of the reasons I chose this property was that I wanted a luxury experience, which it portrayed. But the reality was quite different. They just didn't seem ready for guests. The food was below average. Way below average. Breakfast crepes were cold! The worst thing was, that we missed the warmth we were enveloped in, at the other camps. Here, there was a stern, "this is all we do, too bad you have other needs" attitude, which I did not care for. Even our wake up call was late. I do have to say that they moved my mom to a room closer to the reception area, when we told them that she couldn't walk the distance to the original room. That was nice. However, the dust experience for me was so traumatic, we checked out a day early. (And in case you were wondering, no refunds were offered) It's a pity, because the property seems to have the right infrastructure in place. It just needs a little TLC and that was sorely missing. It would be a magnificent place if the people who ran this place cared. It has gorgeous views of the Kili, has a waterhole frequented by wildlife. The rooms are structured very well and the bathrooms are beautiful. A big thanks to Dominic in the kitchen area who made our short stay somewhat bearable. Unless this place undergoes major change, I can't recommend it. Tawi definitely does not give you the luxury experience it charges you for.
Fantastic lodge, beautiful views of Mt. Kilimanjaro
Our family of 9 stayed at Tawi for 3 nights in August 2020. We had 4 rooms and all had fantastic views of Mt. Kilimanjaro! We loved the watering hole right next to the lodge, where we saw many elephants, zebras, and other animals come to visit. The hosts were very personable and we loved chatting with them when they would stop by to check on us during meals. The food was also wonderful and they were able to make special accommodations for my two sons, who are picky eaters. The best part of the stay was the safaris! We went on a morning and evening safari every day and it was amazing. The guides were so friendly and knowledgable and we felt completely safe. Highly recommend this lodge if you are visiting Amboseli!
Superb lodge in Amboselli with magnificent views of the Kilimanjaro
I regret I’m about to leave the Tawi Lodge for I had the most spectacular weekend here. Alisson and Peter were impeccable hosts; Wilson, a very knowledgeable and calm game drive guide; the whole staff, very attentive to detail. The lodge is charmingly elegant without being overwhelming; the food is delicious (I love the fact that the butter spread comes with little drawings!), and the views of the Kili, as locals call the magnificent Kilimanjaro, from the cabin balconies, absolutely unbeatable!
Best lodge ever! Upon arrival, staff welcome, overall service and their attention to detail was exceptional. No complaints here. The owners Peter and Ally have trained the staff really well and done a great job at Tawi Lodge. There’s a nice borehole where animals and elephants come to relax and drink water just a couple of meters from the swimming pool area which is pretty neat! My wife and I stayed in room 13 or the “Honeymoon Suite”. It was the furthest from the main lodge but it had its perks as we had camel visitors come right up to our lodge. It was a nice sight to see! Mt. Kilimanjaro was shy and it was cloudy when we went in late July 2021 even after going on a hot air balloon ride with Kilimanjaro Balloon Safaris. So we never got to see it but had a great 2 day safari nonetheless. We did not want to leave to be honest. If you’re ever thinking of going to Amboseli, this is a great lodge to stay in. Hopefully we can come back again one day to actually see the mountain peak and bring our extended families next time they visit Kenya. Thank you to the great owners and staff for making our stay in Amboseli one to remember!
A little gem…
What an amazing weekend… A quick trip to Tawi. Outside Amboseli Park but so close. Perfect situation. From the moment we got there it was all go. A warm welcome started us off. The management, and staff were all top class. Nothing was a problem. The rooms all with a view of the mountain. The waterhole, well speechless, and that doesn’t happen often! Always some action. We were very lucky to Kenya’s finest biggest tuskers wallowing there. A great time was had by all of us. A huge thank you…
