Lack of service
Resort was nice. However, we were told it was non smoking and there was designated smoking area. That was definitely not enforced! Lots of cigarette and cigar smoking everywhere! Entertainment was lacking. In fact it was pretty bad. Pool bar service was horrible. One day we were at the pool over 5 hours and had beverage service once. Waiting in line for drinks for over 15 minutes. Only one (slow) employee in the coffee shop. Took forever! Food was ok.
Our first retirement get away
Montego Bay is beautiful. Can't beat the scenery and our weather was great as well. Have been to Secrets in Cap Cana for comparison. The view here cannot be beat but the food and service was average to below average. It might be the culture, but found most employees to be pretty unmotivated and only stepped it up if you complained.
Great Stay at Wild Orchid
We stayed at Secrets Wild Orchid for my husband's work conference. It was amazing! Beautiful views, friendly staff, fun entertainment and great restaurants. I can't say enough about the staff, I had several great conversations with staff members, and since it was our first trip to Jamaica, I soaked up what information they had to share. The entertainment is fun, there is an open stage near the restaurants that provide different shows each night. We thoroughly enjoyed the steel drum band-wow! Not only did they play the drums, they constantly danced in sync to the music. The food at the Mexican restaurant was our favorite for dinner, but for entertainment, go to the Himitsu Asian place. Constant singing and joking from the wait staff. Our waiter was Carlton, and he was awesome! For a quick lunch, the Barefoot Bar at the beach has handy items-try the Jamaican patties. Also, keep your eyes open for the jerk chicken cart that is tasty for an after party snack late in the evening. As part of the conference, we were able to partake in a beach party with full table service, gourmet food and a DJ for dancing. Best night ever!! We took our dancing to the club called Desires, but unfortunately couldn't keep the vibe going we had at the beach party due to the music change. Our DJ played classic rock and the club played music we weren't familiar with, so the dancing ended early. The resort is adult only with a variety of young and middle aged couples. We are in the middle aged category, and would have liked to have a place to dance to our type of music, and thought others would enjoy that as well. And as a side note, if you need transportation in the area, contact Nigel Mighten with Mighten's Island Tours, 876-799-6175. He will go above and beyond to give you information about the area Jamaican culture while providing safe and exceptionally clean transport.
Wheres the secret?
Visited jamaica for my first time with my lovely gf from jan 11th-16th. We arrived at montego bay airport around 11am on the 11th. Was offered one of the best pina coladas on the island at the outside pickup bar. Was layered with extra rum on top and was really good. Began to be haggled by a gentleman with a yankees cap, was friendly but really just saw us as a money sign. As we arrived at secrets wild orchids we were greeted nicely by a gentleman who took our bags. Check in was ok, we were unable to check in when we arrived (i tried to email this resort weeks before and tried to tell them i would be there around 11am and if it was possible if we could get early check in, i did not receive one email back) so as we begun our curious adventure around the resort we ran into barfoot grill. Great hot dogs and spicy sandwiches, after a few hours we were able to check in around 130. Tee tee at the pool is great for entertainment, bingo and water aerobics are fun esp after a few purple rain frozen cocktails as well as the blue hawaian drinks! The guys at the swim up bar are really friendly they serve up some pretty good cocktails and if you throw them a 5 they will spot you from the ocean walking up to See them. Anthony, michael, timothy are great lifeguards to talk to. Kevin the towel guy knows the deal For just about anything around the resort. Location is prefect, food at the buffet if OK. But for the money you would pay 3-5k for a week the sandals is the better spot. The italian place was ok, the french place had a great tenderloin plate and the shrimp app was good. The mexican place os pretty good as well but the plates esp the apps are somewhat small so order atleast 4-5 if your really hungry. The grls at the spa are great. The spa itself is somewhat outdated but the swedish massge was good. Breathless next door is newer and actually really nice but the foam party we attended was really slow and people who were swimming with the foam im pretty sure worked there haha. Drinks were ok at breathless the service was slower than it was over at wild orchid and st. James. The one thing that bothered me was at around 2-4am every morning i was hear smashing forks and knives and plates from the clean up of room service. Sometimes if you hit the red light next to the bed they would deliver it in the box cubby but sometimes they would either just not show up or they would just pound on the door. One night we ordered room service and there was a very talented gentlemen balance the food plate on his head, walked right thru the doorway and places our meals on the table. Had to show some respect mon for him!!! Ya mon!! He was good at that. Nicole at checkout was awesome. Quick and easy. They do not hold a credit card or even tried to upsell in any way. We were unable to actually sot at the hibachi table due to needing reservations thats the only place u need them there. Lines for dinner were minimal we tried to eat right around 6 before it got busy but all dinners are open until 10 then after that the piano bar is the place to be after that. Did not attend the after dark/ desires club (heard it wasnt that great and was pretty small) overall secrets wild orchid/ st. James is at its best a 4. It is not a 5 star hotel (would be great to see a renovation soon) i know they are doing over a pool bar they were in the process of while we were there. And possibly a bigger workout area there is only one next to the spa which is small and gets crowded in the morning. Last but not least the jerk chicken with sauce is pretty damn good as well but if you would rather try it off the resort there are places in town to just ask!!! Overall i give secrets a 3-4.
AMAZING resort in paradise!!
Secrets Wild Orchid was everything we had imagined and more! From the outstanding service, food, room service, cocktails, servers during evening entertainment, Erika at the piano bar (nurse-Heidi says ya mon!! You were amazing!) and Rican at the main-pool swim up bar (woot woot!!) this small island full of beauty will exceed every expectation you could have imagined in an all inclusive resort!! Highly recommended 10/10 for the excursions through Delta as well! Dunn’s River Falls/Blue Hole and the catamaran cruise to Negril’s famous Rick’s Cafe!! It was so beautiful!! Thanks for the most amazing trip, Jamaica! Hope to see you soon!!
