Indigo Grand Hotel des Arts
Originally built 100 years ago, this former aristocratic residence is looking more polished than ever thanks to a recent facelift. Its Liberty-style exterior is freshly whitewashed, while the interior has been given a new look inspired by Verona’s rich history and culture. The lobby sets the tone, with a design inspired by the arches of the Arena and the grand sets of the many operas staged there; the panels behind the reception desk, for instance, represent the garden of Romeo and Juliet. Local materials such as red marble, used to impressive effect in the public areas, help to reinforce the palpable sense of place.
That feeling of being immersed in a cultural experience is what makes Indigo Grand Hotel des Arts such an appealing place to spend a few days. Living up to its name, there are works by Italian and international artists of different eras everywhere: paintings in the inviting breakfast room, sculptures in the private garden - a rare asset in the heart of the city - and more of both in the chic bar. And with museums, galleries, historic squares and the Arena only a short walk away, and free bike hire on offer, it’s a perfect jumping-off point for discovering the best of the city.
There are 62 uniquely designed rooms, decorated in soft blues and shades of off-white to restful effect, with flourishes such as arty oversized headboards. From the comfortable Standard Rooms, there are views over the rooftops or the garden, while Premium Rooms are a little more stylish.
