Verona Holidays

Discover medieval marvels, Italian romance and outstanding opera on dreamy Verona holidays.

Whether you’re scribbling a love letter on the stone walls beneath Juliet’s balcony or shopping at Chanel along glitzy Via Mazzini, you’ll feel the star-crossed lovers’ vibe throughout holidays to Verona. One night you could be watching Aida in a breathtaking 2000-year-old Roman open-air amphitheatre, the next joining the sleek and stylish on their evening passeggiata underneath the ancient gate of Porta Borsari. Then there’s the refreshing taste of raspberry and lemon gelato as you stroll though Piazza di Signori lapped by glorious Renaissance palazzi, and a glass lift ride up to the marble-clad roof of 12th-Century Torre dei Lamberti for panoramic city views.

We’ve been to Verona and love this wistful little part of the world. From the melody of church bells tolling every hour at the Gardello Tower to a glass of sparkling Chiaretto on a pretty terrace, there’s plenty of ‘lost-in-time’ vibes inside the historic centre. We love the blend of Renaissance and Gothic architecture, the fresco-filled churches and the bewitching Italianate Giusti Gardens.

Away from impressive defensive fortresses and intricate architecture hidden inside the city gates is a world of hilltop villages and Veronese vineyards – a Valpolicella masterpiece of wine and whim that gives Tuscany a run for its money.

Café culture
In the heart of the city is the picturesque Piazza del Erbe, a bustling square on the former site of the Roman Forum. The square's colourful market, frescoed buildings, soaring 12th-Century tower and ornate fountain topped with a Roman statue dubbed the 'Virgin of Verona' make this scenic spot a great place for people-watching. Buzzing cafés, restaurants and bars line the square, and it’s dramatically lit up at night when it hosts everything from live music and performance art to author readings and silent discos.

Verona icons
Reverberating with the classical tones of Aida and Carmen, the Roman amphitheatre of the Verona Arena sits in the bustling Piazza Brà, and once the stage of the famed Roman games and battle ground of gladiators, today it’s the setting for some of the world’s most dramatic operatic performances. On the opposite side of the River Adige, Verona’s Roman Theatre was carved into the hillside to make great use of its stunning surrounds below and beyond.
