Sina Astor’s cool, clean design has a touch of a glossy ocean liner about it — appropriate for a hotel that looks out over a broad sandy beach and the azure waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. If you wish to explore beyond the hotel, you can hire bicycles to pedal along the coast or into the shade of the pine forests that run behind the town.

The 76 rooms and suites have recently been redone in a clean modern style with classical details such as antique-style headboards and a neutral palette lifted by splashes of blue or green. The Viareggio Room feels bigger than it is thanks to the clever use of space, and has either a walk-in shower or a bathtub. Large windows offering glimpses of the sea are the main feature of the Versilia Room, though if panoramic vistas are essential, the Versilia Superior Sea View has a private terrace on which to sit and watch the sunset. Finally, the Family Versilia Annex Room sleeps three, perfect for a couple with their first child.

The restaurant is well thought of for its typical Tuscan cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients, especially seafood, and whose terrace - shared with the bar - is a place to linger.

La Conchiglia
