Gorgeous location but underwhelmed.
On the face of it this hotel is beautiful. The architecture and decor is stunning. The pool and garden areas are also well maintained and clean. The staff are welcoming and polite in the breakfast area and around the pool. The room was adequate and clean. The issues causing me to give an average score are around the lack of provision of basic necessities you would expect with a five star hotel. These include no complimentary water in the room. No tea/coffee making facilities. No iron or ironing board in the room. The breakfast is buffet style only. We stayed for a week and no food seemed to be available to order. The fresh fruit supplied was limited and repetitive. The scrambled eggs were solidified and not appetizing. Just found myself craving fresh eggs on toast. I would expect a five star hotel to offer and provide this service as part of my stay. Unfortunately as the breakfast was disappointing we didn't bother using the restaurant in the evening which we had planned to do. The bar area around the pool was poorly attended. Not surprisingly when a can of Coke cost €8. I do not mind paying a little more for hotel food & drinks but everything was very over priced. Thankfully there are many lovely restaurants and bars a short walk away.
The grandeur of the Grand
This was our third stay at this lavish hotel. We enjoy the tranquil easy going life style of the local people and the natural beauty of Stresa - where the hotel is located. Every stay has been perfectly sheer indulgence for the senses. First, there isn't a square inch of surface in the public areas that is not opulently ornate. I love it's rich beauty and how the hotel showcases the many talents, artists and master craftsmen and master craft women from over the centuries. The daily theatre that is silver service of the many gastronomic feast in the spectacularly elegant restaurant is a wonderful masterclass in five plus one star hospitality. Our room this time had beautiful large terrace directly above the musical fountain. with its many statues and mozaics. Sipping our night cap on the terrace whilst watching the light and water show of the fountain as it played the music had a fairy tale quality to it. The spa, opened three weeks before, was heaven. Instead of giving here a description perhaps you just have to experience it. I won't give much away but my favourite tonic was the snow room and the indoor-outdoor pool where a sensor operated glass screen allows you to swim out into the open air and of course back. Local restaurants are also worth a visit, as do taking boat trips to all the nearby islands. You can nip over to Milan for a day of shopping and return for a bit more indulgence afterwards. We would love to return here in the future
I first heard of the hotel when reading Hemingway, and couldn't wait to stay. The property lived up to my expectations in every way. It is beautiful and unspoiled, with beautiful service, too. Some hotels, such as Reid's Palace in Madeira, are so special that I'd make a special trip just to stay in them. I am adding Borromees to my list.
Elegance and Sophistication
This is a beautiful hotel, which feels special. The food in the restaurant was delicious, very high quality, and the service was flawless. I would not hesitate to come back and will certainly be recommending to others.
High service level and great hotel
We really loved it! The new Spa area is awesome and due to covid and low season it wasn‘t very crowded. Staff super helpful and guest friendly, high service level and great food (dinner & breakfast) Location and rooms/hotel area very beautiful too. Only thing I missed was like some egg variations, pancakes, waffles, etc. for breakfast everything else was great and we will be back for sure!
