Drinks at sunset a must
We went to Therasia for a cocktail at sunset. You need a car from the port. 10 minutes away if that. It is a beautiful place with an amazing vista from the terrace. We misunderstood the duty manager at the time. Be warned there is a minimum charge per person for drinks at 20 euros each. The champagne cocktail was 18 euros and two of us had wine at 7 euros, so were surprised to see the bill. We did have some small eats on the house but they were a bit tired and included sunflower seeds and peanuts IN SHELLS! No way were we going to eat those! However, we felt it was worth the money for the experience. But next time we'll all go for the champagne cocktail!! The eats down in the port were far better amazingly. Rustic but freshly done.
Gorgeous hotel in an idyllic setting.
Stayed here for a week’s break at the beginning of September and it was perfect. The hotel itself is comfortable with very friendly staff and delicious food. We stayed half board. Breakfast is buffet style and has everything you could want; pastries, cakes, continental style meats and cheeses, hot options and plenty of fresh fruit. Tea is DIY and coffee is made to order. Dinner is served in the same restaurant where you choose 4 courses off the standard menu (which includes specials that change daily) We also chose to eat one night in the Michelin star restaurant (3 courses included with half board but we upgraded to the full 10 course menu). It was just delicious and all the ingredients were local to Sicily. This place is just wonderful. It’s an easy 15 minute walk to the village but the resort offers a frequent shuttle bus if you’re not up for the hill. We hiked to the summit of the volcano from the resort and it took just 1 hour 45 mins. Can’t recommend this place enough! Transfer from Catania airport is a bit long at 2.5 hours (bus and ferry) but was more than worth it.
Four star Fawlty Towers
We stayed one week on half board which included a dinner in the Michelin star restaurant. We left with very mixed opinions about the hotel and there are good and bad points. It did not match other five star experiences we have had or were expecting. The good points are: location is stunning, spa and pool areas are delightful, breakfast is very good and staff are very helpful, grounds are well kept, the shuttle bus is very regular, mini bars are restocked daily with water/soft drinks, housekeeping is efficient and all rooms appear to have private, large balconies with comfortable seating. On request the hotel provides a service tray with tea bags replenished daily, but a coffee machine is 15euro a day. Milk will be charged as an extra. Unfortunately there were very weak points that let the hotel down: our first room ´garden view’ was dirty, shabby, small and the excuse that it was ´end of season’ was unacceptable - cleaning did remove a lot of the dirt from around the handles but there was a general level of accumulated dust on ledges and the room had evidently not been well painted in the first place. Our next room was more spacious, better equipped and generally of a superior standard. Toiletries were not the Ortigia that they advertised but very cheap nasty alternatives and the spa lady was surprised they were not in our room when we went to buy something. The rooms generally lacked the quality of a five star establishment. Flip flops are provided but we had to ask for slippers and they are all one size - large. We usually find hotel rooms provide one large and one small/medium. Dinner was extremely variable with high points and unacceptable low points - cold, poorly cooked food, muddled orders, slow service (40mins between courses on one occasion), yet the restaurant wasn’t busy. If you have dietary requirements you are quite restricted and even though hotel had been forewarned, the message hadn’t got through - the evening menu can get boring by the end of the week. However some dishes were outstanding and as ever in Italy and Sicily the desserts were excellent. Water was poured up without telling you that it was 5euro a bottle at dinner (free in room and at breakfast?!), there were two serious mistakes with our wine which was just stressful.
Amazing end to a wonderful trip in Italy
This resort is lovely and the perfect place to just chill and enjoy yourself for a few days. The staff was very accommodating and they have a 1 star Michelin restaurant on site. The rooms were lovely with great outdoor area to sit and relax at night and enjoy the starts.
Stylish resort with stunning views
Stayed two nights as part of a tour package. The hotel has a picturesque setting overlooking the sea with views to the distant islands of Lipari and Stromboli. It is truly peaceful and relaxing with well-laid out public areas and a first class (infinity) pool. Rooms are spacious and air-conditioned although the location is such that there is always a soft breeze. Most enjoy a sea view. Food is good although we didn’t try the a la carte. Staff are friendly and helpful and the hotel provides a free shuttle to/from the port where boats go to the mainland and other islands. There are also several restaurants if you want a change from the hotel. The hotel grounds are interesting in themselves as the whole site is built on volcanic rock and there are a couple of nature trails with some unusual plants. All in all, a peaceful ‘get away from it all’ sort of place.
