Mahamaya means 'ultimate paradise', and it certainly does this hotel justice on the gloriously quiet, rustic island of Gili Meno. The hotel is beautiful and understated – it’s small and simple enough in its design that it doesn’t jar amongst the more traditional thatched huts of the island, and the English managers lead an excellent team of staff. The hotel has a distinct character. On the walls you’ll find quotes from the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Mohammed Ali. There’s also a strong focus on sustainability, with water recycling, desalination technology and a reduced plastic policy. Enjoy the tranquillity of the adults-only pool or stay cool while sipping cocktails at the swim-up bar. At the heart of the hotel is the stylish Asian-fusion restaurant and bar, serving up fresh – and where possible, organic – dishes, and you can watch as the talented chef prepares your food in his open kitchen. Come the evening, opt for a table on the beach at the water’s edge and dine by candlelight, courtesy of the pretty hanging lanterns. There are just 18 fairly simple but modern rooms, most with a private outdoor shower. Poolview Suites are set around the two swimming pools, with views across the pool and deck, while the two lovely Beachfront Villas sit directly on the coral sand beach, facing the sea.
Sister hotel to the Sudamala in Sanur, Bali, the Senggigi property features the same beautiful furnishings and tasteful décor. It sits in fragrant tropical gardens by the beachfront, in a perfect spot to watch the dramatic sunsets over Bali’s volcanoes. Olah Olah is the resort’s restaurant, specialising in classic dishes with a creative twist. You can dine in the open-air, high-ceiling restaurant by the pool, on the deck overlooking the ocean, or in the privacy of your suite or villa. The spa sits under a mango tree and offers signature massages as well as traditional healing treatments. Inspired by a great summer palace, the suites here are beautiful, many with traditional thatched roofs in the bedrooms, and all with contemporary décor, hand-crafted pieces of furniture and splashes of bright colour. The bathrooms are particularly spacious, too. Choose between views of the gardens or ocean, and you can also specifically opt for sunset facing suites. For that extra indulgence, One Bedroom Villas have a gorgeous private pool in a large courtyard garden and a traditional open-air pavilion.
A secluded north-west coast location allows The Oberoi to offers its guests complete seclusion. Lombok isn’t exactly overcrowded with holiday-makers, but this part of the island is particularly tranquil. An open-sided pavilion in a coconut grove garden houses the Lumbung Restaurant, serving up fine Indonesian, Asian and continental cuisine alongside incredible views. The relaxed Sunbird Café is ideal for a beach breakfast or light lunch. The Beach Club offers snorkelling, diving, windsurfing and kayaking, or you can simply opt to relax on the hotel’s private beach or in the large infinity pool, which is fringed by palms and looks out to the nearby Gilis. In fact the views in general are stunning here; across to Bali, with distant views of the volcano. The elegant, thatched-roof rooms are huge, dotted throughout the grounds in village-like clusters. Light and airy, they feature natural furnishings with local artwork, a private walled garden with sunken marble bath, and 24-hour room service. All room types are available with garden or ocean views. Spacious Luxury Pavilions are arranged in rows. Luxury Villas are even larger, each contained behind high stone walls for the ultimate in privacy, with a landscaped garden, rock pond, raised pavilion for dining and private terrace. Luxury Pool Villas also have a private 8x5m swimming pool.
Beside the sugar-white sands of one of Lombok's best beaches, Hotel Tugu Lombok offers guests a quirky take on traditional beachfront indulgence. Overflowing with oversized statues, funky antiques and age-old buildings, this hotel is unashamedly extravagant – a statement of flamboyance and originality, it's an eccentric homage to the ancient cultures and heritage of Indonesia. Rich in character and personality, Hotel Tugu Lombok charms from the outset. Pull up to the carved wooden lobby and you'll be stepping into a history that dates back more than 100 years, while on a stroll through the grounds you'll pass by lotus ponds, open-air temple spas and even a cart-drawn afternoon tea. Head towards the beach and take note of the four giant Bhairawa statues standing guard at the infinity pool. Or look out for the giant Lombok rooster who crowns the poolside entrance to the hotel's all-day dining pavilion. The bold and brilliant rooms are unlike anywhere else on the island. Where elaborate designs meets bespoke Indonesian style, more is definitely more here. Celebrate late 19th-Century Peranakan culture in an Ampenan Bungalow or head to a colonial-styled Aloon Aloon Garden Villa to indulge in a private palm-filled garden and sunken bathtub. The Mahabharata-themed Bhagavat Gita Oceanfront Suites are definitely worth the splurge, thanks to their uninterrupted sea views and private plunge pools. Or opt for the extravagant Puri Dadap Merah Villa – a temple-styled villa with a petal-shaped pool, sea-facing spa and private rooftop dining area.

On the southern shores of Gili Trawangan, this stylish escape has an away-from-it-all exclusivity. Once the former grounds of an ancient coconut plantation, today the hotel is secluded within a sprawling 19-acre estate – just a short stroll from the buzz of the island's main street, this is the perfect retreat for guests wanting uncompromised beachside relaxation. The ultimate island getaway, coconut palms provide a gorgeous natural shade and there's always a thatched day bed nearby to encourage any-time relaxation. At its centre, the hotel has an infinity-edge pool with umbrellas and loungers, while on the private stretch of white sand you can bask in day beds, hammocks and refreshments made to order. For adventures on the water, there's always snorkelling equipment, stand-up paddleboards and canoes available to hand. You'll also find surfboards thanks to the island's only surf break being just minutes away. Further offshore, the hotel's hand-built private outrigger provides exclusive island-hopping day trips and day-or-night private cruises. There are just 18 bungalows within the estate. Exceptionally spacious and incredibly secluded, each one is a private Indonesian sanctuary complete with alang-alang thatched roofs and traditional rich wood décor. Within the plantation's grounds, the restored Palm View Bungalows exude tropical luxury living, thanks to their private gardens and generous front terrace. Further up the estate, the Private Pool Bungalows look out to perfect ocean views with a sunset-viewing veranda and private plunge pool. Opt for a touch more indulgence with a Deluxe Private Pool Bungalow – tucked away behind antique Balinese doors, these are retreats of utter elegance thanks to the oversized day bed, exclusive poolside dining area and the large 12-metre private pool.
Brand new for 2019, The Kayana Lombok will bring contemporary chic style to the north-west coast of this island. Looking out to views of the Lombok Strait, this hotel is located on idyllic white sands and will offer just 32 luxury villas that celebrate the hotel's modern take on ethnic interior design. While a dedicated villa butler certainly brings the indulgence, all of the room types are refreshingly simple in style. There's a sundeck, sitting area and free-standing bathtub in the spacious bathroom, and a draped four-poster bed provides the centrepiece to each bedroom. Affording total exclusivity, outside a private pool overlooks beachfront, garden or hillside views – for the most secluded setting, choose a Hillside Villa to enjoy a larger pool and ocean views. Make the most of your free time and while away the days at the beautiful beach or oceanfront main pool. Follow a sunbathing session with a lethargic afternoon at the spa; a relaxation haven of double-bed treatment rooms, personal terraces and a specialist menu of professional massages and therapies. Dining will focus on the hotel's Blue Restaurant & Bar; a contemporary hilltop setting near the spa.
