About this independent tour
This is a private itinerary including a car and driver and local English-speaking tour guides for any sightseeing.
COCHIN Influenced by many cultures throughout its rich and varied history, Cochin is an incredible city to explore. Visit the rather understated Dutch Palace (closed Friday) and the Paradesi Synagogue (closed Friday & Saturday), and see the iconic Chinese fishing nets. During your time in the city you’ll also have the opportunity to watch a traditional Kathakali performance.
MUNNAR The beautiful hill station of Munnar sits high up in the Western Ghats at the eastern edge of Kerala, and is surrounded by rolling tea plantations. Enjoy a half-day visit to one of these tea plantations for a guided tour and visit the Tea Museum (closed Monday) to learn about the history and development of Munnar’s thriving plantations.
KUMARAKOM Spend some time in peaceful village of Kumarakom, a cluster of pretty islands and shallow waterways on the edge of Lake Vembanad. During your stay travel by motorboat to Philipkutty’s Farm for a delicious home-cooked lunch.Visit a butterfly garden and enjoy a bird-watching tour before a sunset cruise on the lake.
ALLEPPEY (BACKWATERS HOUSEBOAT) One of the real highlights of a trip to Kerala is the opportunity to cruise the famous backwaters on a traditional house boat. These beautiful boats are known as kettuvallams or the ‘boat with knots’ and each thatch-roofed boat has been converted from an original cargo boat which would once have been used to ship rice and spices between Kuttanad and the coast. cruise through the maze of waterways and enjoy this truly relaxing way to travel.
NELPURA HOMESTAY Continue to the waterside region of Kuttanad where you will stay at a charming homestay. Nelpura has been owned and run by the same local family for almost 150 years. Enjoy warm hospitality and home-cooked Keralan cuisine and authentic backwaters experiences. During your time here you‘ll have the opportunity to visit an old house in the Brahmin community, take a rickshaw or bicycle ride to a nearby church and travel by canoe to a local temple.
Tailor your tour
A few days relaxing on one of the state's beaches is easily added to an exploration of Kerala. The pace of life is similarly slow to that of the backwaters and Western Ghats and there'll be plenty of time to enjoy the sea breezes and see local life play out around you. Kovalam is the most popular beach destination here and we feature a handful of resorts including Taj Bekal Resort & Spa. If you'd like to try something a little different, head to Marai for a stay at the Marari Beach Resort, or even hidden-away Kasargod, the setting of the authentic retreat of Neeleshwar Heritage.
