The town of Thekkady is the gateway to Periyar National Park which is set in the mountains of the Western Ghats in Kerala. Periyar covers 300 square miles of grassland, hilly forest and marshland. Famous for its large number of elephants, the reserve is also home to the rare lion-tailed macaque and Salim Ali’s fruit bat, and a number of endemic bird species.
India is intoxicating. It’s frenetic in places but gloriously relaxed in others.
