River cruise itinerary
Day 1 UK to Prague, Czech Republic
Depart on your flight from the UK. On arrival, transfer to your hotel for a two-night stay.
Day 2 Prague, Czech Republic
Your first full day in the beautifully-preserved city of Prague will begin with a guided tour. You’ll wander through the Old Town and see the 15th-Century Astronomical Clock. Cross the Vltava River and explore the grounds of Prague Castle in the district of Hradčany and visit the wonderfully gothic St Vitus Cathedral. This evening, there is an optional folklore dinner show.
Day 3 Prague, Czech Republic to Nuremberg, Germany
This morning you will have some free time to explore Prague in a little more depth. An optional tour which takes in Charles Bridge – the city’s oldest bridge – and the hillside neighbourhood of Malá Strana is also available. Later, travel to Nuremburg (approximately three hours) where you will board your ship and sit down to dinner on board.
Day 4 Roth, Germany Spend the morning on one of the two available tours. On the first of these tours, you can explore Nuremberg’s restored historic heart. It includes visits to the Schöner Brunnen – a gilded and beautifully intricate fountain – the gothic cathedral, Frauenkirche, and the pretty Nuremberg Castle. The other tour takes you to the eerie ruins of the Nuremberg Rally Grounds. Alternatively, you can stay on board and listen to a talk on the Main-Danube Canal, a real feat of engineering. This afternoon the ship will set sail for Regensburg.
Day 5 Regensburg, Germany
A full day will be spent in the Bavarian city of Regensburg which has a beautiful medieval Old Town. You can join a guided walk around this historic region and see the Old Town Hall and the Roman gate of Porta Praetoria which was built in the 2nd Century AD, or join an optional excursion to the Weltenburg Monastery (payable locally). The afternoon can be spent exploring Regensburg independently or perhaps heading out on one of the ship’s bikes. Later in the day there will be a beer tasting on board which will be followed by dinner and live entertainment.
Day 6 Passau, Germany & Linz, Austria
The next stop will be in the ‘City of Three Rivers’, Passau. As the nickname suggests, three of Germany’s main waterways – the Danube, Inn and Ilz Rivers – meet here. You can join a guided walk through the city or head to Salzburg in Austria as part of an optional excursion (payable locally). This afternoon you will cross the border and arrive in the Austrian town of Linz where there will be free time to explore at your own pace.
Day 7 Melk, the Wachau Valley & Vienna, Austria
Spend the morning in Melk, perhaps taking a tour of Melk Abbey which sits on a rocky outcrop overlooking the town, or joining the Avalon Adventure host for a hike through the surrounding countryside. Back on board, as the ship cruises onwards to Vienna, you can soak in the landscapes of the Wachau Valley. On arrival in Vienna, you can attend an optional Royal Waltz concert (payable locally).
Day 8 Vienna, Austria Today’s included excursion is a guided tour of Vienna’s landmarks. These include the Hofburg, the Opera House and St Stephen’s Cathedral. Alternatively, join an optional tour of the grand Schönbrunn Palace. The rest of the day will be free to do as you wish.
Day 9 Budapest, Hungary The Hungarian capital is the focus today and you can see the city’s main highlights on a guided tour. There will then be some time to explore Budapest at your own pace, perhaps visiting one of the famous thermal baths such as Gellert Baths and large Szechenyi Thermal Baths.
Day 10 Budapest, Hungary Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
Is this for you?
Avalon Waterways provide a laid-back and down-to-earth cruising experience. The aim is to make you feel at home while on board and create a welcoming atmosphere. You’ll have a choice of excursions in the destinations you visit throughout Germany, Austria and Hungary with Classic tours with a local expert and Discovery experiences that showcase the region’s culture. On-board Adventure Hosts can also accompany you on walks and hikes.
Your cruise will be on one of the five different Avalon Waterways ships that sail the Danube. These include the 128-guest Avalon Artistry II, the 166-guest Avalon Passion and the Avalon Envision which will be launched in 2019. Each ship has modern and spacious public spaces and a sun deck. All of the ships also have a whirlpool on the top deck. We have included a stay in a Deluxe Stateroom; however, we recommend upgrading to one of the Panorama Suites with wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling sliding windows that open out to create an Open-Air BalconySM. The beds also face the window, allowing you to wake to views of your new destination.
