Not the expected 5* experience
I was already in the Mövenpick Soma Bay, so I can relate. The Mövenpick in El Gouna never meets the standard of 5*. We arrived 3, but the room was prepared for 2. In 3 of 7 nights we could not sleep because of bad acoustic isolation of the rooms. Once the neighbours room was cleaned at 4 in the morning! The reception is polite, but not always competent and slow. We could not reach them over phone 5x in a row. The stuff is generally polite, speaking english is a problem for many. We thought, the housekeeping is under the expected level, but after the management explained their complicated situation, we understand their covid-handling a bit better. The resort is spacious, the garden beautiful. Some of the pools (for children) were not heated. The meals are very tasty, but the buffet is just awful, too much people at once, surely more then 50% of the hotels capacity, no flair of dining classy, only in El Sayadin. Wlan is mostly stable, but not secured, don't even dare to do internetbanking or some security-related work. The clienst behave also not in the way you can expect it from other 5* hotels, it seems the hotel has to lower the standards just to stay profitable.
Plz don’t think to go there
I am really sorry regarding my stay at Movenpick El Gouna ,, first the furniture is old , the room cleaned once every 48 hours,,no twice or even once daily,, also the employees and receptionists are lazy not helpful,,,for example when I want to check out I called reception to send an employee to take my luggage and I waited 15-20minutes called them more than one time finally no one came ,,,very very very bad experience,,plz take care if you think to go there ,,,I am so sorry regarding the management in this big hotels
Nice hotel - shame about the lack of COVID safety!
So, first of all I should say that the hotel is very nice, slightly shabby but I like that, it feels "lived in". The room was great, large, spacious and airy with a super view over the sea and all the kite surfers doing their thing. Cleanliness and sanitation of the room was good. The layout takes a bit of getting used to too but its fine, pool area very "kiddy" but enough spare loungers by the lagoon and beach to get some peace and quiet if thats what you want. There is a nice cafe/bar set up near the pool (swim up bar) where the food was very good. We did find it strange for a hotel which operates all inclusive (we were HB) that they shut this well before the pool closes - we heard several complaints from other customers about this. Breakfast food quality was very good (counter to what I've read here we had no issues with food quality). However - what really upset me was the fact that the hotel staff did not enforce the legal requirements currently in Egypt that people wear face coverings inside. Despite there being posters up this was completely ignored by the majority of the guests - I really wanted to stop them and ask if they had heard of COVID!! When I took this to the front desk I was told "its a free country if you don't want to wear a mask we can't force you"!!!!!!! The staff were all very well protected and there were temperature checks at the dining area and hand sanitisers - but everyone was walking around with plates of food and crowding around the food counters with no coverings at all!! We felt so nervous we ended up eating out in the Marina or Downtown every night despite our HB, where things were well observed. This is not an "Egypt" attitude - I live and work in Cairo and people take virus protection very seriously here - its the law to wear face coverings inside so why is the Movenpick not enforcing this - and why are the guests (mostly from Eastern Europe) not taking other peoples safety seriously!! Shame on you Movenpick. If you, as a prospective guest are at all worried about your safety in these times I would avoid until we return to normal and the resort can return to being a perfectly pleasant lovely one.
The safest hotel
I was afraid at the beginning to stay at a hotel during COVID-19, but Mövenpick El Gouna really very safe hotel and I enjoyed my time ( 3 weeks) a lot at this hotel and can say for everyone- this resort is totaly safe for vacation. Rooms not just comfortable and clean, but fully disinfected after cleaning and left vacant for 12 hours. Resort take hygiene and cleaning standarts very seriously. The hotel is a certified ALLSAFE property. Staff here very helpfull, kind and profesional. The food is excellent. I loved El Sayadin Restaurant. El Gouna in general is such an exclusive & nice and safe place, with a lot of things to do and this resort not only safe but also on perfect location and you can learn here diving, kitesurfing, play tenis or just rest in very nice and calm atmosfere. Resort is in very schort distance from downtown's bars and the Marina. It was my first visit, but definitely not the last. Thanks Mövenpick El Gouna for being such a safe haven during this crisis.
Outdated hotel with mediocre food
We spent a week in El Gouna and I honestly had expected a lot more. My memory of (other) Movenpick hotels from previous trips was spectacular with great food and 5 star feeling all around. Unfortunately (and some due to COVID), this time the experience was just mediocre. I had booked two rooms and the reception staff didn't manage to keep the two tabs separated, even though explained it several times to the front office manager. The buffet was not how I remembered it from previous stays (some certainly also due to COVID). The food, except for the mezze, was rather tasteless with few healthy choices. However, the waiters at the buffet were very attentive and super kind! Check-out took forever and they tried to charge me for a 1970 iron that I supposedly damaged (it came already broken from housekeeping). Not at all 5 star like. The rooms, the pool area and the beach area were very clean. Restaurant choices were very limited with few lunch options. I'm sorry to say, but we won't be back.
