Worth the journey!
I have never had such a stressful time of getting to a place as I did this one. I should have realized I was in for a trip of a lifetime, once I heard the sales person's voice after I replied to their question- Your driving yourself? I replied Yes, thanking nothing of it. Their was a pause and then are you sure? Well you know us Americans, we can drive anywhere... 4 wheel-drive and an SUV and we are off... Well this place is remote and it had rained heavy the night before causing landslides the likes I had never seen, so I had no idea what I was in for. So the quick story.... super stressful, not for Gringo driving, with no guard rails,1000 foot drop offs, and guys with donkeys looking at you like you cant drive up here. So after 30 kms above the nearest town you arrive at the Jurassic Park Gate. In you go. You see the jungle close in around you and the road turns into one lane of mud, crossing rivers on sides of mountains, (might be called the tops of water falls at this altitude) and realizing there are only trees to stop you if you go over the edge for which you can not see the bottom, then to suddenly spring upon an opening just for arrivals and there is this Beautiful Sleek, Modern, Building with smiling faces saying "We are so glad you made it!" You just want to faint. So I pried my knuckles off the steering wheel and shuck hands. In amazement, I commented to the person taking our bags that was the most challenging entry way I think I have ever navigated to a five star hotel and he replied, Your just getting started... So in all seriousness you might want to take the shuttle, the staff and the hotel are there for you to have a wonderful interactive stay. It is well worth the money and the journey to take in such awe inspiring views. If you do go you will never forget your stay here if you fully allow yourself to take it all in....enjoy!
Great Experience - even as a solo traveler!
Mashpi had been on my bucket list for ages. When Ecuador opened up during COVID I figured timing was right. Mashpi did not disappoint! Excellent food, great guides, wonderful staff modern comfy rooms. No TV, but pretty good wifi for streaming. I'm a city boy at heart but even so, it was great to get back to nature in the beautiful cloud forest.
Stunning wildlife, great staff/guides and first rate food and accommodations
We spent three days the March at Mashpi Lodge and had an amazing time. The setting is incredible, buried deep in the cloud forest, the road in takes you well off the beaten bath. Arriving at the sleek, modern hotel you quickly realize that your accommodations are first rate. Meals are excellent, plenty of variety and they happily modified to meet our gluten free and vegetarian requests. For us the best part of our Mashpi Lodge stay were the guides (Shout out to Lizardo). Many guides grew up close to the Mashpi Lodge property and have studied and experienced the local plants and animals extensively. Our nighttime walk and early birding adventures were amazing and our guide made sure we experienced the Cloud Forest to the maximum. Special thanks to Mark and Juan Carlos for the care they show to all guests.
Amazing diversity and nature with luxury accomodations - very safe!
Our family of 6 (2 adults and 4 daughters age 16-21) spent 4 days/3 nights at Mashpi Dec 2020 - Jan 2021. The drive to get there is the worst part (really rough and windy roads), and then once you arrive everything is absolutely incredible! Our guides Manolo and Cynthia were super knowledgeable and packed tons of activities into our time tailored to our family. The cloud forest/rain forest is magical, and the experiences match - from the sky bike, to the dragon fly, to the hummingbird garden, night hikes, and hikes/swimming at waterfalls. The lodge itself is beautiful, and the food and service were amazing. We were so happy that we added this onto our Galapagos/Amazon trip - it is unique from both of those ecosystems, and we had some of our favorite hikes here. The guides, lodging, and service only enhanced such a dramatically diverse, magically beautiful piece of nature.
An exotic place only 2 hours away from Quito!
Mashpi lodge is an incredible hotel in the middle of the Andean Chocó rainforest. It's a private area with over 2500 hectares of protected forest. The hotel occupies a small space within the reserve, causing the least environmental impact possible. From the moment you arrive you will receive a VIP treatment, everyone knows your name, everyone is worried about you, the food is delicious, the drinks are nice, it's a truly amazing experience!!! Due to the Covid pandemic, you will have a private guide for you, so you can build your trip however you feel like doing so. It rains a lot, but the weather is warm, so you can still go around the reserve even if it rains. I would recommend you take your own rain clothes and boots, but if you don't have it, the hotel will provide everything for you. I was 21 weeks pregnant when I went there and the staff was very worried about satisfying my special needs. I was able to do all the activities, but I guess that is because I have been an athlete all my life, I think I wouldn't recommend a pregnant woman to do all the activities if they are not used to doing exercise regularly.
