Luxury in the Cloud Forest
The pick up was impecable. Then the drive there... well, it was long and a bit of a challenge. The road was winding and it was very easy to get car sick. That said, the scenery was beautiful and the stop in the town of Tulipe was a great break. Once we arrived, everything was amazing. The rooms, with ceiling to floor windows and trees, orchids and bromeliads just meters away, the restaurant, the spa, the activities, the service. We especially appreciated the fact that we had a guide exclusively for us and also the 'dry your clothes' service which meant that when we got back from a walk or an outdoor activity and it had rained (it rains a lot!!!), the hotel offered to dry our clothes. The service was fast and free. I also very much appreciated the general ecological awareness. In terms of activities I really enjoyed the "Dragonfly". Slowly gliding through the sky through the canopy of thousands of trees, looking out at the mountains in the distance or down at rivers and lush vegetation was magical. Even the downpour on the way back was part of the adventure (especially with the service I mentioned earlier). We also really enjoyed going to see the hummingbirds and the night walk! It's a great unique experience, especially if you have never spent time in the cloud forest.
We cannot speak highly enough about this amazing experience! These few brief days went by entirely too quickly and will always be remembered! A marvelous respite from the rain forest—they have worked out all the details to ensure a great adventure and a smooth landing back into cozy dryness. The rooms, the food, the staff—all exceeded our expectations. The focus is on the guest experience. The guides are generally master-level biologists and well-versed in these environs. The great design features of the building and its furnishings add to the experience.
Absolute Highlight of our Mainland Ecuador Trip
Every aspect of our stay at Mashpi was exceptional. The rooms, food, service, guides, and activities are simply world-class. The modern, well appointed rooms have wall to ceiling windows looking out into the cloud forest which sets the tone. For a remote location, they manage to bring in all the necessary supplies for a fantastic kitchen and bar. The highlight, of course, is the amazing and broad set of activities that are available - for every one, we were assigned our own guide for our family, which I think is the norm (a guide for every group of guests). One of the most unique activities is the canopy tram - an open car tram that traverses a couple kilometers of the cloud forest. Because of the small number of guests, they can and do stop the tram whenever there is something for a guest to see. We had the fortune of see an eagle in a nearby treetop consuming its prey. They stopped the tram and backed it up just for us for several minutes. (We also waited a few minutes because the guests ahead of us were near some howler monkeys.). The lodge is very popular, so hard to book, but I highly recommend it, especially for families.
Fantastic place. Great guides and staff and a wonderful location in the cloud forest. The only downside was that evening meals were of patchy quality and the piped music in the dining room was awful......give us silence please. BUT the walks and the birds etc are very hard to beat. The guides are very knowledgeable. Hardly a bird or plant is beyond them.
Worth every penny!
Don’t think twice on booking this property it will blow your mind. From superb services, food, guides, rooms and breath taking views. You will not experience this anywhere else. Make sure you do bathe in the waters they are so refreshing and energizing. Special thanks to our favorite guides Brian, Andres and David. Our waitress Erica who always greeted us with a smile and took great care of us. Our bartender Gilson always made the most amazing drinks.
