My advise....stay and home and do not waste your money!
This is what you can expect from Paradisus Varadero Resort! We checked in and was sent to a room in the family section of the hotel, this room was shabby, disgusting and full of mosquitos, no hot water and no electricity. I decided to escort my wife to the beach in the morning, which was basically a construction site, the echoes of Kenny G and concrete saws, tractors and a full construction team really destroyed the music, and even the sound of waves from the sea. I met with the Virgin Rep on 27th December and informed him that my room, coupled with construction was unacceptable. I was informed of some light decorating, not major construction. Also, the Virgin Rep was unable to help us with the Virgin Sunset tour, which was also disappointing. The Virgin Rep walked me to meet the Public Relations Director of the hotel, Jonathan, after some discussion and many phone calls, Jonathan moved our room to another section of the hotel, commonly known as the ‘Royal Service’. We finally moved to this area and room number 2634 at 5.30pm on 27th December. We thought the conditions would be better, but actually major holes in the doors caused me to have in excess of 30 mosquito bites, even with constant use of Lifesystems Deet repellent and after bite cream. We used a towel to try and block the areas open to the mosquitos, we reported this to the hotel, but we never had an support on the matter. Construction continued in this area too, but finished after a day or so. The next issue in the room was rats, we believe they came from a hole at the back of the bed frame, which we opened, we found food eaten in our bathroom, and in our living space. We shared the Royal Service with some extraordinary people who shouted and feel a sleep in the restaurant and fighting in the main communal and bar areas, which was incredibly stressful at times. January 31st January, we had booked the New Years Gala, this time we queued 40 minutes in extreme heat 8.30pm sitting opened at 9.10pm, only to be told you do not have a reservation step aside we have guests with reservations, this time there was no food and beverage manager to help or support us with our reservation. We decided to try and find some food elsewhere and have a midnight drink at the Royal Service bar, which turned into another nightmare with violent guests. We left Paradisus Varadero by private transfer for Havana Airport at 11.30am on 2nd January 2020 and with great relief! I have spent time in 3rd world countries, and visited over 160 countries worldwide, without question, this was the worst experience of my life!
Paradise at the Paradisus.
This was our 4th trip to the Paradisus and second at the Royal Service. We absolutely love this resort. I cant say enough about the staff. They are all so helpful and so friendly. Food was very good, especially at the Bella Mar. They have done many beautiful updates to the resort, including the main lobby, pool and the pool bar. Looks fantastic. We will return in 2021 for sure or maybe earlier. Our winter home away from home.
The food is even below Cuban standards. The same food is served every day at the buffet. Very bland and poor selection. The menu at the pool bar looks good but most of the food advertised isn't available when you order it. The place seemed empty, but it was still a struggle to get a reservation at one of the à la carte restaurants. All you hear from the staff at this hotel is NO, NO, NO, they have an excuse for everything. Extremely poor customer service. Pathetic Super Bowl party, worst I've ever seen at a resort. You couldn't even see the miniature TV they provided. No beer available for the mini bar. Some people bought their own beer and the hotel staff took the cans of beer out of their fridge. Stealing cans of beer from the guests, WTF is that? Don't stay at this resort, you'll be disappointed and then some. The Manager doesn't have a clue how to operate a resort.
It was okay
Coming to this resort we were very excited to visit. We have stayed at this chain in other countries and it has always been lovely. I am always hesitant to write a negative review but I also want people to have realistic expectations. So i will start with the positives: The pools are nice and they have a great kids pool (the pools are very cold as a side note). The pool and beach always have room for you to sit and it isnt overly crowded, some of the staff was helpful, nice layout of hotel with nice yards, although there was not a lot of variety for food (same food every meal every day) we didn't get sick and there was always something we liked. Now for the negative: first the hotel does seem a bit run down and the rooms are dated, there are under renovations but this didn't really bother us other then a few restaurants being closed. There were very helpful staff however the other staff was not always so helpful. A lot of times we would go to the buffet and no one would even offer us a water. They would only give usone bottle of water for your room a day despite asking for more and as a family of 4 with a baby on formula this isnt enough. We asked many times for more water and no one could help us at the bars or housekeeping. They actually had to call a manager from the restaurant to get us a water which I find so crazy because it's water. Smoking is allowed everywhere in this hotel which as a mom with small kids I didn't love this. However this was most of cuba that we saw. Lastly about the rooms just make sure you check your beds, my son was covered bites all over his face, hands and feet that got worse each night. His crib also collapsed two times on him while he was sleeping and he only weighs 20lbs. We also found when we pulled our electronics out of the sockets the whole holder would come out of the wall and we could see wires and the hole the electrical was run through. And there were always cockroaches in the room. It was just an ok trip. I am not sure if this should be considered a 4.5 star hotel or if this is common for a lot of hotels in varadero. There was definitely good things about this place but probably more bad. It did look like the reserve section and royal service were way nicer so I would probably upgrade to that area if I was already booked here.
Overall pretty good
This resort was generally really nice though did have some short falls. Beach: really lovely white sand, plenty of chairs and shade, no need to go early to reserve. Pools: really nice, seemingly recently renovated, nice and clean. They were renovating the snack bar bathrooms nearest to the pools, so you kind of have to plan your bathroom trips ahead. Room: we stayed in 1122 which had terrific central location but was pretty dated and in need of updating. Poor air conditioning and kind of musty smell, beds and mattresses were clean though. Lots of storage for your things. Shower had hot water but didn't drain well so it flooded the bathroom. Buffet: overall not the best, repetitive and didn't have standard foods (no bacon at all for the week), but we didn't starve and aren't super picky. Snack bar and beach grill: great food and service at both. A la cartes: Mediterranean and Japanese were both good, the fusion restaurant Bana was so so. Service: was excellent, concierge, bartenders, gardeners, servers across the board were great, attentive and positive. Sometimes they ran out of things but always tried to make it work. Tips were appreciated but we still got great service when we didn't have any money on us. Bugs: lots and lots of mosquitos, bring bug repellant and then pack more. Money: we brought Canadian and exchanged it for CUC. There is a little bank kiosk near the entrance of the hotel and had essentially the same rates as the airport, maybe 1-2 CUC less. Very convenient though. Internet: only available in the lobby. You have to connect with a card that has a username and password. Each card is 1 hour of internet, and they were giving these out for free. Everyday you can get 2 cards per person per room (4 total). But you have to go back to get more everyday. This hotel was very good value for money, so it was an enjoyable stay for us. Certainly it could be improved by some room and food upgrades, but it was still overall pretty good. A little bit on the quiet side, there wasn't much nightlife, but it was a very relaxing and pleasant stay.
