Best hotel in San Jose
Go to place in the city for some romance, luxury and top service. Pampered and well looked after. We whiled away the hours in the comfortable outdoor dining area and moved more graciously by the staff into the indoor bar/cafe for drinks as they had to set up the dining area for dinner. We were upgraded and given a lovely room with a very generous welcome fruit basket and a gorgeous enclosed garden. Very charming and tranquil place.
After our cruise
Everything was very good in this hotel, the common areas offered great activities, we slept in a beautiful room, the housekeeping was impeccable, good location, we felt safe, very varied and full breakfast, fast service, good value for money
This hotel is top notch. It's beautiful and impeccably clean. What truly makes it special is the staff. Every single person, from Danel at reception who checked us in, to Pablo at reception who gave us information on the history of the hotel and helped with directions, to the bellman who also helped with directions, to the waitstaff and housekeeping staff, these employees are true gems. In a country filled with the most amiable people, this hotel stands out. Though tap water in Costa Rica is fine to drink, this hotel has filtered water. There is also hand sanitizer everywhere for guests to use and, though it may sound minor, the only one of our 5 hotels that had conditioner as well as shampoo in the bathroom. We so appreciated our request for early check in being accommodated, though obviously this cannot always work out, as well as our request for a quiet room. The food is delicious. You can stay at less expensive places, but a stay here is absolutely worthwhile and very special. A fabulous way for us to end our 2.5 week stay in this exceptionally beautiful country. Pure Vida!
We went for a deluxe room which had a small planted area outside a pair of doors - a nice touch. The room was of reasonable size but the bathroom was small. Decor is a little old fashioned but everywhere was clean. The room was quiet and we slept well. The restaurant is good but don’t expect European standards. Service is fine without being good. Both food and wine were far too expensive for what is on offer. However, it is a very pleasant looking restaurant and you will enjoy your meal. There is a small enclosed “deck” on the roof with a few sun loungers and a couple of hot tubs. This is the only outside space on offer. There are a couple of non dining tables at the entrance to the restaurant, but there is no “bar” as such. This was our first hotel in Costa Rica and we thought it overpriced. We have now experienced three hotels and they were all overpriced! I think one has simply got to accept this as the norm.
unusual, charming place
We spent one night here on our way out of the country. Initially, we'd planned to park our things and see a bit of the city, but we arrived tired, and there didn't seem to be much near the hotel, so we decided to stay put. We enjoyed a beverage and snack at the charming bar while we waited for our room (we were a little bit early) then we settled in, had a good workout in the clean, attractive little gym area (sheltered, but open to the sky and the view- water and towels provided, and a sweet herb wall) and went downstairs for a delicious dinner with excellent service. Our top floor suite was a delightfully eccentric pastiche of Victorian and Spanish influences, altogether a great space, with a very comfortable king bed, dark panelling, vintage tiling, plants, a city view, a coffee cart, a safe, snacks, a jacuzzi, everything you could want for a restful, luxurious night (the shower stall could stand an update at some point, but not terrible.) The cleaning staff must be excellent- the room was impeccable. The next morning, after a delicious breakfast in the courtyard, we wandered the hotel taking pictures. The eccentric, rambling decor delighted us, like walking through a collage. There's a greenhouse area full of jungle plants, a pretty fountain, a collection of wall clocks, lanterns, lattice walls, antiques, photos, etc. Prettiness, interest and fun. When it was time to head for the airport, our cab arrived promptly. Altogether, a fine experience. My only suggestion would be to ensure the desk staff greet people warmly and offer every assistance. While they stored our luggage for 1/2 hour on arrival, which we appreciated, they did not suggest where we might sit to wait, or where we might go for a walk. We had to find our own way to the bar, after a brief attempt to go walking. When we booked our cab, we also found them efficient but a bit cool. Overall, professional rather than friendly. But that's a small matter compared to all we liked about this hotel. A last, happy memory of Costa Rica.
