We loved our stay at El Grano. We got in from the airport late at night, but we were impressed with the appearance of the hotel from the street - it has a cool stairway entrance that makes you feel like you're stepping out of the city into a haven. And on the inside it's even better. First, we were served with fresh glasses of juice right when we walked in. Then we were taken to our very nice, comfortable room. The service was very friendly throughout. The hotel also has a nice garden in the back, and a great restaurant with a cool courtyard and fountain. The food (we had breakfast) was delicious, and again, very friendly service. We didn't stay here that long (just a night) but we really enjoyed it and we recommend it highly to anyone staying in San Jose!!
We stayed at Grano De Oro for one night after our flight to Costa Rica. The hotel has a lovely crew that willing to help with everything you need. We really surprised from the size of the room and from the hot tubs area. Don't miss the hotel's restaurant!
Extremely charming !
We had two deluxe rooms, with a lovely patio decorated with tropical plants. The hotel is a lovely boutique hotel in the heart of San Jose, in a classic turn of the century style. We love the restaurant in which you get a very good breakfast, served at the table, which can be slightly slow compared to the classic buffet. We had dinner there and the cuisine was excellent! We enjoyed the two elliptic machines at the tiny gym on the roof terrace. Very charming hotel !
Inside of the rooms is the low point
We stayed 2x within 4 nights. The first time, we checked in (exhausted) at 11.30pm and had to leave again at 6.15am. To be frank, I didn't like the hotel on that stay because all the negatives were accentuated, and none of the positives. I would have rated it a 3. The negatives: - the rooms are OKish, but not >$250 standard. Shower curtains over a bath, toiletries in gym style dispensers, not particularly comfortable beds etc - the immediate area looks menacing late at night. This is further emphasised by very visible security on the street (which is presumably necessary). When we returned, it was another short stay but this time arriving at 5pm. Enough time to get a feel for the hotel, see it in daylight, and to have dinner at the restaurant. On this stay, I saw the positives of the hotel: - lovely staff - fabulous atmospheric old school dining room (loved it) - nice (if limited) rooftop gym and jacuzzi - a hotel with a lot of character inside. And outside, in daylight, you realise that the area is OK. If I wasn't going to have any time to enjoy the hotel, I might pick somewhere that has a better room product. You can't really find anywhere that has a more expensive rate than the Grano del Oro, so you need to have some time to enjoy the hotel's vibe to get benefit from that. And if you have that time, it certainly seemed like a far more attractive and characterful hotel than anything else on offer in the city. One thing that I would suggest the hotel thinks about is the bedding. They have 1 not particularly comfortable pillow, and then a large pillow covered in an elaborate pillowcase made from the same material as the bedspread. It is really unclear whether this pillow is decorative or functional. Are the pillow cases washed between uses? I assumed no (it's not clear) and anyway it was an uncomfortable fabric to have you head on.
Good location for a family visit
Great hotel, had a family room with a terrace. The food is very good and the breakfast was the best we had in Costa Rica. Tour companies pick up here and its convenient for arriving from the San Jose Airport. Has a rooftop gym and hot tubs which were good after a hot day in San Jose.
