Grateful for my visit but wouldn't stay again
The hotel is close to SJO airport which makes it great for wanting to stay somewhere outside of the city but not too far away if you've already been travelling long hours to get to Costa Rica. However, that does mean at times you will still hear the faint but present noise of cars/trucks/police sirens that drive by near neighbourhoods. You are immersed in nature but not in the depths of it. Maybe that is a preference for some. The restaurant definitely needs improving. In fact this totally ruined a lot of the experience for me. Food is such a great way to get to know a country, and good food could be so easy to get right. Especially given that the land is so rich in its own produce. I found myself not wanting to eat there at all and was desperately searching "sodas" (typical little family run restaurants) in the area to serve up something better. The quality of the food is below average and trying to be something it doesn't need to be. It definitely doesn't look like what is pictured here. I wish they would re-develop their menu with a better chef to bring in more of the tradition and culture of real Costa Rica. Also the restaurant plays terrible music which sets the atmosphere for the place. Being in nature, it would be great in the mornings and lunch to have no music, just the sounds of the song of the birds and all the many other fascinating noises you can tune into which is so beautiful and calming. At night time it would be nice to have a lighter, less cheesy "playlist". The brochure in the rooms with all the guest information is not up to date. Concierge is not 24hours available, they come in at 7am. Breakfast is not a 6am start but actually 8am which is so late given most the activities and tours start at 8am so they agreed to serve me breakfast at 7:45 which meant I had to rush to order and eat. It's also not great for those who wake up early. The activities and the tour guide Ulysses is amazing, super informative, friendly and the best bit about the stay here. My bedroom was super comfortable, clean and the bed and bed sheets great. The walls are super thin though so we could hear the couple above us having sex :-) The pool is definitely not as clean as it looks in the photos, I understand the rich fauna all over means you get a lot more leaves in the pool and insects too but it was also a little "cloudy". I live in a similar environment so I am used to this but it does feel a little unkept. There is no service by the pool and there could be simple additions to make this a more relaxing place to be. i.e. clean pool that is checked regularly, maybe some service for drinks/fresh juices and / or pool towels with sun beds that are cushioned. There is no room service here either. I felt very uncared for re food and drink. If it wasn't for my refillable water bottle and clean drinking tap water and the dried fruits that I travelled with I would have starved and dehydrated. There are lovely aluminium bottles of water in the mini fridge however these weren't replaced after the first day. The staff are sweet but not the most professional. In all honesty I would rate this as a 3 star hotel and not a 4 star. I unfortunately wouldn't stay again, and if it was my only stay here in Costa Rica I would be a bit disappointed. It's not super cheap, I would have rather paid a little more money to stay somewhere excellent or paid less and rented a beautiful air bnb with superhosts and made my own nourishing foods daily.
Nestled above San Jose is a wonderful coffee farm & inn! Simple elegance with local touches. Exemplary service. Coffee was fantastic. Loved hearing & seeing all the birds and butterflies. Highly recommend this lovely place!
Amazing hotel, can improve the restaurant
We visited the hotel during February 2021, first I would have to say that the location, the infrastructure and the personnel were amazing. It's close to the city but you feel like being in a retreat paradise. The lobby, suites, pool and other amenities are in perfect shape, really well maintained and lastly every staff member has a smile when servicing you. On a side note, the SPA is also amazing and the deep tissue massage was really professional and relaxing. I really believe this hotel is one of the best places to visit and have a relaxing weekend. The only part that really disappointed us was the restaurant. The place itself is magical and has a great view, the service of the staff is great, they are there to answer your questions and again always a smile. The quality of the food is another story, the menu is not that big but has good variety but the execution of the dishes is not good. I order a BBQ ribs that was supposed to be cooked for hours (I assumed will be super tender and full of flavour) nevertheless it was super dry, the meat was not tender and overall flavour was barely acceptable. My wife ordered gnocchis in a roasted tomato sauce and to be honest the sauce tasted like bottled BBQ. The breakfast was acceptable but nothing to be amazed. The prices of the restaurant are not super high but are not worth the quality of the food. I was sincerely excited about eating here but considering the amazing place the hotel is, the quality of the restaurant is not up to the hotel. Maybe more basic food but well executed could benefit the place. Especially considering that if you are staying there, at night, you will expect to have dinner in the hotel and not going out. Another thing to improve would be to be able to serve beverages in the pool. In a 4/5 stars hotel you would expect pool service but here you have to go to the restaurant each time you want something to drink in the pool. In regards to Covid protocols, everything was really well managed and you feel safe all the time so no complaints
Lovely quirky place close to San Jose - a gem of a place!
We stayed 3 nights at the Finca Rosa Blanca in December 2020 and had a relaxing time at this wonderful artistically created place. When flew into San Jose International airport (Juan Santamaria Airport) and they organised a private mini van to pick us up and it was a short journey to the resort. We booked a Junior Suite and were not dissappointed with the size of the room, lovely decor/murals, large bathroom with his & hers sinks, deep bath and huge mosaic tiled round shower area, coffee/tea machine and fridge. In the morning we woke up to birds singing and went out onto the balcony to see a superb view and enjoyed sitting on the loungers watching the morning birds and butterflies. From our balcony we could see San Jose city lights and mountains in the distance and we felt we had the best room in the hotel because of this. We did not miss having a TV as it was so relaxing just to see the sounds of nature and enjoying the peace and quiet of the place, we really felt we slowed down here and it started our 22 days trip of Costa Rica in the best way possible. Food in the restaurant area was good and the a la carte breakfast was ample and my husband especially enjoyed the local 'Huevos al Cafetalero' and “Tipico” Breakfast with beans, eggs and rice. The open area of the restaurant had good views of the surrounding trees and plants and mountains in the distance. We would recommend the coffee plantation tour that Finca Rosa Blanca organise on site, it was fascinating to see the coffee growing and walk through the plantation and then see how it is processed from bean to cup and see the history and equipment used in the museum part. We also enjoyed the free coffee we had at the end of the tour. A special mention must go to Edgardo Quesada in reservations who helped us book our stay and excursions that were all perfectly organised! They also arranged a super tour to the Paos Volcano where we wore hard hats and walked to the top of the volcano and were lucky that it was a clear day so we could take pictures into the crater, impressive to see this so clearly (see my shared photos!) We also had an early bird tour arranged at 0600, as this is the best time to see the birds as they are most active in the early morning. Well worth getting up early for this. The decor and architecture was so interesting and unusual and the wall painting around the pool area and also our room gave it a tropical feel. This made it feel unique and I especially liked the quirkiness and the fact that it was not like a 'typical' standard style hotel, as all the rooms are different shapes and the whole resort is unique in every way. There was a lovely pool and jacuzzi tucked away with surrounding plants and trees and tropical artwork on the surrounding walls on the area to shade from the sun. The staff are so helpful and friendly and staff and guests adhered to wearing masks and tables were sanitised and kept apart and we felt safe. Rooms, restaurant and pool area were all clean and our bedroom had fresh towels changed each day, the room made up and coffee/tea refreshed. We hope to return again in the future as this resort is in a great location to San Jose and for excursions nearby. Next time we will definitely visit the Barva Volcano National Park as this was unfortunately closed when we were there. A gem of a place to stay and we have enjoyed looking at our photos since returning home.
While we only stayed at Finca Rosa Blanca one night, we enjoyed the sprawling grounds that had such appealing architecture. And the restaurant had a marvelous viewpoint perched over the twinkling evening lights of San Jose. Our dinner and breakfast wee top notch. Our coffee tour guide Ulises provided an exceptional overview about the state of the the coffee market in Costa Rica. Great experience.
