We walked into our room, then walked straight out and booked another hotel. The bedding was disgusting the towels were threadbare. I’m not gonna lie probably wouldn’t leave my dog sleeping in that room. Do yourself a favour and book into the Poco A Poco just down the road lovely place.
Pleasant stay in the clouds
A great place. Staff are friendly. The rooms are larger than average and very clean. The location is excellent to explore the surrounding area. The cost of food and alcohol is a big high is you are not from a dollar or euro based economy. Mats by the bedsides would be an excellent addition to the room. Overall we both loved and enjoyed our stay.
Great place to visit
Excellent location for a peaceful visit and some adventure included!! The original Canopy, located in the premises, is the best! The staff is wonderful, food is awesome, adventure is exciting!! You can see different kinds of birds, monkeys, have a night walk in the reserve to look for sloths and all types of night animals.
Trip from Arenal was around four hours, this included a lake crossing which is fairly scenic, the skipper did make an effort to look for wildlife and we did see some birdlife. Once across the lake the road is gravel for the most part and very narrow, steep and bumpy (so try not to sit above the axle) but after some time the roads get a little better and in any case the scenery is awesome, saw some swallow tailed kites en route. Check in was trouble free, the rooms are simple, functional and clean, no TV but there is WiFi ours was fine but some people mentioned it was sporadic in their rooms (but then again using the internet isn’t why you are here).. As long as you keep the doors closed you shouldn’t have any issues with bugs but you are in the middle of a forest, we had Agoutis, Coatis and an Armadillo wandering around outside of our room, got some great photos. There are walking trails through the cloud forest these are well marked and not very hard going bar one or two places. There is plenty of birdlife but very difficult to spot in the forest we wanted to see the Quetzal and although we thought we heard one no luck with sightings if you took the time and moved quietly in the forest you may see more. Being a cloud forest it rains here a lot so always head out with protection (we used the cheap transparent ponchos -worked very well, added advantage you don’t cook due to the humidity). One thing to mention here it can get quite chilly due to the altitude. We used the restaurant for breakfast, there is a menu but we settled for the rice and beans staple with an egg, great. There is a viewing deck which is part of the restaurant fantastic for wildlife viewing, when we were there the hedge was alive with hummingbirds (several species) lots of hummingbird moths the ubiquitous MotMot and several others. There are bird feeders and hummingbird feeders but the birds are not fed often enough to make them dependent on the handouts which is probably a good thing. Rooms were good, bar service and prices reasonable and the restaurant food better than expected, couple this with a stunning location, helpful staff and you have a place where I would stay again and if you are adventurous they also provide zip lining.
Would stay here again!
I really enjoyed this place. The breakfast is great. They have a sunset happy hour. On the trails nearby we found an armadillo, Pizote's, Agouti's, and a variety of colorful birds. We could hear howler monkeys and toucans but we did not stick around to find them.
