Due to COVID-19, much of our 2020 travel plans have been cancelled, but as avid travellers we were itching to get away. Because we can't really leave Canada right now, we opted for our first ever "staycation" outside of Toronto. This was also the first time we've stayed at a hotel with our small dog. The Westin Trillium House was great. It was end of June, so just before the summer rush. We were a bit apprehensive, given COVID-19, but the hotel did a great job of sharing detailed information on cleaning policies and hotel procedures before we arrived. Due to the pandemic, check in was easy - there was virtually no one at the hotel - face masks in public areas, hand sanitizer everywhere. We had a 1 bedroom suite with a king bed. Since we were travelling with our dog, we had a pet friendly room on the first floor, with patio doors to a little seating area and a patch of grass. The room was a great size, had a small kitchenette with all the basics (so we could order take out or delivery and comfortably eat the dining room table). You cannot leave your pet unattended, which was fine, since we didn't want to eat out anyway. Twice we got takeout from the onsite restaurant - which was FANTASTIC even in takeout form. The overall experience was nice. Because of COVID they only do room cleaning upon request, which is fine - we were only there for 3 nights. If you needed anything like towels or other amenities, they would deliver to your room in a sealed bag, all very clean and easy. We would definitely go back, it's a great easy getaway out of the city (esp given travel restrictions etc.).
Dog friendly? Just a little...
We stayed for two nights with our puppy. The staff were friendly but we were disappointed in the overall experience. We didn’t realize dogs cannot be in the pool area, nor can do on the gondola to hike (purpose of our trip) but we also had to still pay $16 each to use the trails and drive up ourselves and the in house restaurant’s patio isn’t dog friendly . Small inconvenience but didn’t ruin our stay. However the room was more of a disappointment. Our first room the a/c didn’t work. They did promptly send a engineer who was able to get it to work for 30 mins but ultimately we had to switch at 11pm as it was 32 degrees that day. In the second room I noticed the dog chewing on something near the edge of the bed. Upon wresting it out of her mouth I was concerned to see it was a piece of broken glass! When I looked under I found several more pieces (see picture) and a toothbrush! This was concerning as it could have been seriously damaging to our dog or a small child and we expected better cleaning standard especially during Covid 19. Some tips if your traveling with your dog - Kaytoo and Fireball were pet friendly. Also many of the local breweries- we visited Collingwood, Sidelaunch and Thornbury.
First time in Blue Mountain/Collingwood - Excellent visit, will definitely return.
This was our first time to Collingwood/Blue Mountain. We just did a quick one night trip to get out of town. We booked a Queen Suite, we had a very large room with a den and bedroom (though I wish it would have been a king size bed haha). The room was ready early when we checked in. We had a nice room facing the village on the 4th floor. It's a very wide hotel, so if you have mobility issues you might want to ask for a room near the elevator - I prefer to be away from it to help reduce noise so this was great for me. The bed was very comfortable, and the view of the village and Lake Huron was great. Parking is $20 per night for underground parking. Lots of restaurant options all over the village. Staff were very friendly. Masks were worn by everyone and lots of sanitizer. No hair dryers in the rooms given the environment, but not a big deal. The room was very quiet and it was nice to be a bit further away from the village - which was very busy. There was a nice balcony to sit out on as well. I would definitely stay at the Westin again the next time I am back in the area!
A bit dated and questionable extra charges
This is my third visit. My first was decades ago. Sadly the rooms are not dissimilar from my first visit. Yes the tv is updated and the beds replaced but not much else. No sense of design just very tired looking. That in itself can be overlooked. What was frustrating were the extras they charged for what was already pricey rooms My favorite is their beach which is a 6 km drive away In order to use the beach we had to buy a play all day pass. I have traveled to numerous hotel everywhere in the world and this was the first where we had to pay to walk on the hotel beach. I understand the use of a chair ( not really ) or a towel ( which is free at the pool) but to go and walk is unheard of. Shame on the hotel and management That said the staff were friendly and competent. Management on the others hand and policy should be examined and likely replaced. Westin you can do better. I am a world of Hyatt globalist and Marriott wants my business. It will not get it with this type of policy.
Excellent summer get away
I've never been to this hotel, but due to travel restrictions, decided I would so some semi-local stays. The Marriott off peak points promo was a deciding factor. I spent 2 nights (one was a points stay, the other a revenue stay). As a Titanium Elite I was upgraded to a one bdrm suite with den with a view of the pond/village (west). I felt very safe at the hotel. They require that you wear a mask indoors and there are strict cleaning protocols. Certain things have been removed from the rooms (hair dryer, ice bucket), but are available upon request. Also social distancing guidelines (2 people max per elevator, etc). Pool time has to be pre-booked the night before and you are allowed 90 mins. The staff then takes 30 mins to sanitize the pool area before the next group of guests comes in. Breakfast on the patio at O&B was excellent. This hotel has not used the Covid excuse to skimp out on Elite benefits. I had some issues with the first room I was assigned and Robin at the front desk was outstanding with the service recovery. It was my first time at this hotel, but definitely won't be my last. Also the location right in Blue Mountain village is fantastic!
